In light of a deadlock in my earlier poll I decided to make a few tweaks. Enjoy

What is your obsession with MLK being a Conservative? He would've been (and was?) a strong pro-social justice liberal IMO.

Yes, he was quite the lefty. Policy wise, a President King would have resembled Jesse Jackson.

A much more interesting--and realistic--scenario would be a Reagan versus King race in 1980.

I agree he had the social justice thing going but MLK was a conservative on many things.

He'd be pro-life, pro-traditional marriage, noninterventionist foreign policy (which is the true center-right foreign policy).  His niece Alveda had said so on many occasions.

Assuming this is true, that still doesn't count for the main unifying point of the GOP and the main unifying point of Conservatism, regardless of whether it is between Libertarians or socially conservative hawks: Economic and Fiscal Conservatism. I doubt King would be in favor of kicking poor African-Americans off their welfare. In fact, I remember an article where he believed an even better program would be warranted to help make up for the centuries of enslavement. Beliefs like that don't tend to sit well with the Centre-Right.

Ah, King on the ticket headed by a dude who criticized the 1964 Civil Right Act for a number of occassions...

The point: How dumb can you get?

There are butterflies that you fail to understand that lead to Reagan/King. It's a couple things JFK does that lead to some interesting political alliances.

There are certain things about history and politics that you fail to understand that would render your scenario impossible.

It's not only possible but quite plausible.

A more realistic scenario may be one in which Ronald Reagan runs for President in '68, reaching across the aisle and picking Democratic New Hampshire Governor John King, a strong proponent of the Vietnam War.

I think JCL may be confusing MLK with Alan Keyes. For some people it's hard to make a distinction between two black people.

I know the difference betwixt the two and I'd support both of them.

You REALLY know the difference "betwixt" the two? Congrats. You won a Nobel Prize in Logic!
