This is a question that I have asked many people before to moderates who live in not-so-moderate states and vote for, say, a Democrat nationally but Republican locally because local Democrats are so liberal.

What party do you feel that you most fit in, and in what state?

I think the New Hampshire Democrats probably fit me well.

Philadelphia is PRIME for that.  NE Philly has 4 Republican state Reps and all of their districts voted overwhelmingly Kerry and Schwartz.  I think though it has more to do with the fact that people have a dislike for the Democratic-monopoly run city and like to have some Republicans around.  Granted, I worked a poll to help topple one of the 4, but he lost despite Kerry doing well here.

Acctually, the Pennsylvania Republicans fit me pretty well.

They are more socially moderate and more populist than the national party as a whole.

How can you be more socially moderate and still populist?

Populist means you lean socially conservative and economically liberal. A good example would be Senator Breaux.

I know what populist is, but he said he is more socially moderate than most Republicans but also a populist...

I can agree with that.  Thing is PA varies drastically among Democrats.  You have a more socially conservative bunch in western PA, Northeast PA (Scranton-Wilkes Barre-Hazleton) and Northeast Philly and a more socially liberal bunch in Center City Philly and the Philly suburbs.

As for me I consider myself between a Gephardt-Clinton Democrat economically and a Russ Feingold civil libertarian socially.  Geographically that would make me somewhere between a NE Philly Dem economically and a Montgomery County Dem socially.

You love to pin me as that.  Funny I was on a Philly for Dean blog back in 2003 and some of them were Katz voters (like me).  I guess you're right.  A lot of the things people say about his persona people say about me as well.  I wonder what he thinks about Section 8 housing reform if he ever came across it?

That fits me, as well. Though the Iron Range is usually thought of as only northern Minnesota, there are 2 iron mines in my county. The politics of the area are similar to those of northern Minnesota, and I fit the local Democratic attitudes fairly well, although I'm probably more socially liberal than the average Democrat around here. Economically I fit in well with the area.
