1996
President Biden won reelection by a small margin in 1992, but his life would be cut short only a year later, when he is assassinated by Francisco Duran in Madison, Wisconsin on December 1st, 1993. Vice President Cuomo took the oath of office, and became the 42nd President. Unfortunately, the timing was bad for him. In early 1994, the stock market crashed and another recession started. The Democrats performed well in the midterms, making their majorities in each house stronger. President Cuomo announced he would not seek another term, opening the Progressive nomination. The surprise winner of the Progressive primaries was Senator Ralph Nader of Connecticut. The Democratic primaries were not contested-former Vice President Harold Washington won with only a small challenge in the form of Lyndon LaRouche against him (who later ran as the nominee of the far right Nationalist Party. This caused a split in the party, with many of its memebers resenting the take over by LaRouchites forming the Heritage). The election was decided by 756 votes in South Dakota.

Former Vice President Harold Washington (D-IL)/Governor Dick Gephardt (D-MO)-270 EV, 47.8% of the popular vote.
Senator Ralph Nader (P-CT)/Senator Arlen Specter (P-PA)-268 EV, 47.7% of the popular vote.
Activist Lyndon LaRouche (N-NH)/Illinois Secretary of State Janice Hart (N-IL)-4.2% of the popular vote.
Others (Libertarian, Green, Heritage)-0.3% of the popular vote.

2000

The United States would finish the 20th century with a strong economy and low unemployment. The recession that had formed under the Biden and Cuomo administrations had concluded. The Progressives geared up to take back the House in 1998 midterms, which was successful. On the foreign policy stage, the United States grappled with growing tension with China and uprisings in South America. President Washington's health remained a concern for many Americans. Washington turned 78 in April of 2000, making him the oldest serving President. Critics of the President asserted that Vice President Gephardt was in reality the one who executed all the duties of POTUS. Doctors nationwide asserted that Washington was in good health, however. In November, the Progressives nominated Progressive superstar Paul Wellstone of Minnesota to run against Washington. Wellstone selected popular Senator Rudy Giuliani of New York as his running mate. Although initial polls showed Wellstone ahead of Washington with a 10-point lead, Washington's campaign machine was tough to overcome. Washington won re-election in November, but the Progressives increased their margins in the House and picked up five seats in the Senate.

President Harold Washington (D-IL)/Vice President Dick Gephardt (D-MO): 276 EVs, 50.2% of the popular vote
Governor Paul Wellstone (P-MN)/Senator Rudy Giuliani (P-NY): 262 EVs, 49.5% of the popular vote
Others (Nationalist, Heritage, Libertarian, Green): 0 EVs, 0.3% of the popular vote

2004
President Washingtons second term is uneventfull for the most part. His refusal to sign a unbalanced budget in 2003 led to a brief government shutdown, but the 82 year old President stood firm. The Democratic primaries were left open when VP Gephardt declined to seek the Presdency. Bob Riley of Alabama, and John Lynch both declared full campaigns, followed by a quite a few more minor candidates (including Ron Paul, Tom Tancredo, Evan Bayh, and Tom Vilsack). Lynch was the winner, taking Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina. The Progressive primaries saw a battle between Rudy Giuliuani and John McCain for the nomination.

Senator John McCain (P-AZ)/Senator Russ Feingold (P-WI)-324 EV, 56.7% of the popular vote.
Governor John Lynch (D-NH)/Senator Sam Brownback (D-KS)-214 EV, 43.1% of the popular vote.
Other (Nationalist, Heritage, Green, Libertarian)-0.2% of the popular vote.

2008

President McCain's term was widely successful, as he charted a moderate path. His successful response to the massive humanitarian crisis caused by Hurricane Katrina won him much praise, although his aggressive national security measures caused no small amount of controversy in his own party. However, towards the end of his term, the economy ran aground, and the aging President found himself unprepared to face a flagging economy. The field was thrown into disarray when McCain shocked everyone by announcing that, at 72, he would not seek re-election. Vice President Feingold ran for the nomination on a platform of aggressive government intervention in the economy to ease the crisis, but he was upset by a surprise entry - Attorney General Rudy Giuliani, a former Mayor and Senator. He touted his knowledge of the economy and job creation from his time as Mayor, as well as his national security credentials. By combining the security policies of President McCain with a new approach to the economy, he was able to present himself as his own man, separate from the current administration, and easily fended off the Democratic candidate - the Populist firebrand Sen. Sam Brownback of Kansas.

Attorney General Rudy Giuliani (P-NY)/Governor Brian Schweitzer (P-MT) - 368 Electoral Votes, 55.4% of the popular vote
Senator Sam Brownback (D-KS)/Governor Bobby Jindal (D-LA) - 170 electoral votes, 43.9% of the popular vote

Let's do a short one.

Gov. Mario Cuomo (D-NY)/Sen. Jeff Bingaman (D-NM)-255 electoral votes, 36% of the popular vote
President George Bush (R-TX)/Vice President Dan Quayle (R-IN)-168 electoral votes, 31% of the popular vote
Mr. Ross Perot (I-TX)/Admiral James Stockdale (I-CA)-122 electoral votes, 32% of the popular vote

The House selects Cuomo.

1996

Senator Ross Perot (F-TX)/Governor Jerry Brown (F-CA)-288 EV, 45.4% of the popular vote.
President Mario Cuomo (D-NY)/Vice President Jeff Bingaman (D-NM)-138 EV, 30.3% of the popular vote.
Governor Carroll Campbell (R-SC)/Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT)-112 EV, 24.1% of the vote.
Other (Green, Libertarian, Taxpayers)-0.2

Perot forms the Freedom Party in 1993, and leads it to a massive victory in the 1994 midterms. Perot and 4 other Freedom Party candidates win election to the Senate, and 59 Congressmen in House. As a result, Newt Gingrich is forced into a coalition with them in order to be speaker. "The Freedom Party is here to stay" Perot declares! The Senate does not suit him for long--President Cuomo was never viewed as "legitimate" by most Americans, as polling at the time showed. His domestic policy being blocked by Republicans and Freedomites in the House, and the economy faltering, Cuomo quickly fell in approval ratings. For the first time in over a century, a third party takes the White House!

2000:

President Perot 's election may have proved to be an upset but the public fell behind their new President, in contrast to former President Cuomo, who is still bitter about the loss. In his first month, President Perot passed a budget full of across the board cuts, and by the end of the year President Perot passed a major modification to NAFTA,  which gives the United States more of an edge. In the 1998 Mid Terms, the Freedom Party forms a majority in the house thanks to an alliance with the Republicans, choosing Dennis Hasbert as the speaker.  By 1999, the Budget is growing into a surplus and the economy is back on track again. On the Foreign Policy side, The terrorist group Al Qadea is taken down and it's leader Osama Bin Laden arrested and given the death penalty by the UN.

The Democrats nominate Senator Al Gore of Tennessee, who was endorsed by Cuomo after beating John Kerry in the NH primary. Senator Gore chooses Bob Graham to be his VP. The Republicans, who have no real chance of winning, nominate the first woman nominee of any party Senator Elizabeth Dole of North Carolina, who defeated Steve Forbes in the primary. She selects John McCain of Arizona as her VP. The Freedom party ticket stays the same.

On Election Day, President Perot wins another term in office by a bigger majority. The new party the he formed in 1994 won their first majority in the senate, proving that the party will be around for a while to come.

2004

Senator Joe Lieberman (D-CT)/Governor Tom Vilsack (D-IA)-271 EV, 36.1% of the popular vote.
Senator John McCain (R-AZ)/Governor Mike Huckabee (R-AR)-164 EV, 33.2% of the popular vote.
Governor Jesse Ventura (F-MN)/Congressman Ron Paul (F-TX)-30.1%
Others (Green, Libertarian, Taxpayers)-0.6% of the popular vote.
The second term of President Perot is marked by Education Secretary Jeb Bush's "No Child Left Behind" program and several environmental programs. In 2003, the US military launched military operations against Iraq, destroying a nuclear power plant outside of Baghdad, and successfully implementing a no fly zone over all of Iraq, after the Iraqi army launched gas attacks across the Turkish border. However, on the night of April 4th, 2003, Iraqis stroke back, shooting down 11 planes, and capturing 13 airmen. The crisis continued until May, when Special Forces attempted to raid the Republican Palace (where the prisoners were being held in relatively good condition), leading to the deaths of all 13 hostages, and 5 Navy Seals. Secretary of Defense Collin Powell and Secretary of State John Warner resigned. The failure of the raid ultimately lead to a decrease in Perots popularity, and was seen as a defeat at home.

The Republican primaries started with an impressive win by Alan Keyes, a Maryland Congressman, over former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, and Senator John McCain. McCain went on to win New Hampshire, and Gingrich won South Carolina. McCain won the nomination on Super Tuesday. The Democratic primaries saw Joe Lieberman of Connecticut edge out a crowded field of rivals, including Russ Feingold, Evan Bayh, and John Kerry in Iowa, and afterwards, New Hampshire. Finnally, the Freedom Party held their convention. Governor Jesse Ventura, Treasury Secretary Pat Choate, Congressman Ron Paul, Governor Angus King, and Congressman Tim Penny. 10 primaries were held as a test run. Among the candidates running, only Treasury Secretary Pat Choate and Governor Jesse Ventura competed in them. After strong write-in performances in New Hampshire, and Wyoming, Congressman Ron Paul entered. At the convention, Jesse Ventura won on the first ballot, and picked Paul as a running mate. Lieberman eventually won the White House.

2008:

Governor Charlie Crist/Senator Gary Johnson-270 EV's
Governor George W. Bush/Governor Mitt Romney-142 EV's
Governor John Edwards/Senator Barrack Obama 126 EV's

President Lieberman took office during a time of crisis and did the best he could, but early on his advisers were begging to doubt the President.  After a year he gave control of the Military decision to Secretary of War Sam Nunn, who increased the pressure on Iraq and Saddam Hussein, who along with his sons was captured in December 2005. President Lieberman did get a gain in popularity thanks to his handling of Hurricane Katrina, a rare category 5 hurricane which hit New Orleans. However, the economy took a turn for the worse in 2007, entering a deep recession. President Lieberman passed a bail out for the struggling companies which angered both the Republicans and Freedomites because of their belief in the free enterprise system. As a result of this, Lieberman becomes the first President since Jimmy Carter to have presided over a troubled economy.

The Republican primary field grew long and wide with several would be candidates entertaining: Governor Mike Huckabee, former Governor Mitt Romney, Senator Fred Thompson, and former Texas Governor George W. Bush. Huckabee won the Iowa caucus, Romney won NH, and Thompson and Bush tied in SC. The race stayed tight until the end of the primary when Bush won the nomination, choosing Romney as his VP.

The Democrats had an unpopular incumbent facing two energetic challengers: Senators Hillary Clinton of NY and Governor John Edwards of NC. Lieberman was challenged from both sides of the party, and after loosing several important primaries .  Governor Edwards won in a convention battle, and choose Illinois Senator Barack Obama as his VP.

The Freedom Party had a three way battle between Ron Paul,  Rick Santorum, and Charlie Crist. Crist dominated the primaries and won easily, choosing New Mexico Senator Gary Johnson as his VP.

The race was a three way battle with all candidates sharing the lead, with a possibility of another house decision. However on Election Day despite making it late into the night, Crist won the election thanks to Alaska and California.

2012:

President Charlie Crist / Vice President Gary Johnson - 31 Electoral Votes - 18% Popular Vote
Governor Ed Rendell / Mayor Michael Bloomberg - 252 Electoral Votes - 43% Popular Vote
Governor Mitch Daniels / Economist Bruce Bartlett - 255 Electoral Votes - 39% Popular Vote

President Crist is criticized by both sides as being "too moderate" and not being "decisive enough" to handle the crashing US economy. Crist initiatives do get through Congress but he refuses to bailout General Motors leading to the failure and liquidation of the company. By the time of November 2012 the economy is by far the number one issue with 15% of Americans unemployed and close to 30% being underemployed.

President Crist decides to run for another term and Vice President Johnson (after some public hesitation) decides to stay on.

The Republicans nominate Governor Mitch Daniels of Indiana who selects conservative economist Bruce Bartlett as his runningmate. Some doubted Bartlett's qualifications but in the end they were largely overlooked due to his expertise on the economy.

The Democrats nominate former Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell for the Presidency who selects billionaire Mayor Michael Bloomberg as his running mate.

No one wins a majority in the Electoral College, making the stock market drop even further than previously expected. Rendell/Bloomberg came in 2nd in the Electoral College but won the popular vote, while Daniels/Bartlett has a plurality of the Electoral College and lost the popular vote to Rendell.

In the House, Crist/Johnson receives no support, and they elect Governor Mitch Daniels as President. In the Senate, Mayor Michael Bloomberg is elected Vice President.

Sorry for mistake, but Kansas was trending very enough to Democrats in 70s. In this thread, they win one of seats at 1978 election. I thought into giving Nebraska (they had 2 democrats senators), but Kansas would support Brown in a close election...

1984:

VP Dole/Senator Baker- 396 EV's
VP Nunn/Governor Clinton-142 EV's

President Brown took office in 1981 hoping for a good term in office and started out well. He passed a new energy job system package and worked on education reform. However, things started to fall in January 1982, the economy entered a deeper recession with Pennsylvania and Michigan entering a near depression. President Brown responded with a foolish tax increase on all social groups, which lowered his popularity rate to the 40% range. Then to make matters worse, 30 Americans are taken hostage in Grenada, a small island in the Caribbean. As a result the US invaded the country, against directions by the UK and the UN not to, and kicked out the government, but only 10 of the hostages survived. President Brown, after this declined to run for another term.

The Democrats eventually choose VP Nunn as the nominee after beating Senator Gary Hart in the primaries, Nunn choose Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton as his VP nominee.

The Republicans, knowing they have the election "In the bag" feature several candidates, bit the front runners are former VP Bob Dole and CIA Chief George Bush. Dole finally wins the nomination, and chooses Tennessee senator Howard Baker as his VP nominee.

On Election Day, Dole wins the election by a comfortable margin.

1988

Governor Michael Dukakis / Governor William J. Clinton - 315 EV - 50.1% Popular Vote
President Bob Dole / Vice President Baker - 223 EV - 49.8% Popular Vote

President Dole, generally well in his first term but what hands Governor Dukakis the election was sky rocketing health care costs in much of the mideast and west, which the Democrats were able to blame on Republican economic policies. Even though President Dole was popular, many Americans saw him as ineffective.

1996:

VP Clinton/Senator Wellstone
-390 EV's
Senator Thompson/Senator McCain-148 EV's

President Dukakis's second term was considered by many as a success. The economy continued to improve, and as a result President Dukakis decided to focus on Education reform. Under the Equal Education Act, each county school system was forced to have performance standards and increase the drop out age to 18. The act also created a system for financial aid through major businesses, taking some of the load off the government's system. In foreign policy, President Dukakis sent soldiers on several peace keeping missions in Hatti, and several African nations.
In the 1994 Mid Terms, both houses stayed in the Democrats column, minus a few gains for the Republicans

The Democrats face a small primary field with VP Clinton being regarded the favorite only facing a challenge from NJ Senator Bill Bradley. Clinton easily wins the nomination and chooses Senator Paul Wellstone from Minnesota as his VP.

The Republicans field is crowded with several canidates including: Senator Fred Thompson of Tennessee, Governor William Weld of MA,  and Senator Dan Quayle of Indiana.  Thompson eventually wins the nomination and chooses Arizona Senator John McCain as his vp.

On Election Day, VP Clinton becomes the first VP to be elected President since Martin Van Buren by a landslide.

2000:

After 12 years of Democratic Government, the public is ready for a change. While many of President Dukakis' reforms were popular, the public grew uneasy with his successor's attempts to build on them, including a push for single-payer health care. This caused a collapse in Clinton's support in the south. Combined with growing rumors of "Zipper problems" and what was seen as lackluster responses to several terror attacks abroad, Clinton found himself facing an uphill battle for re-election. President Clinton attempted to shore up his base by attacking the perceived radicalism of his GOP opponents, but that strategy unraveled when former VP nominee Senator John McCain won the New Hampshire primary. He doubled down on his moderate appeal by selecting popular New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, an effective reformer of a deep blue city, as his Vice President, and by pushing his foreign policy experience, was able to win a close but clear victory over the incumbent. A third party run by columnist Pat Buchanan, unsatisfied with the conservatism of the GOP nominee, posed a challenge but in the end was not able to derail the Republicans.

Senator John McCain (R-AZ)/Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R-NY) - 293 electoral votes, 49.1% of the popular vote
President Bill Clinton (D-AR)/Vice President Paul Wellstone (D-MN) - 245 electoral votes, 46.9% of the popular vote
Columnist Patrick J. Buchanan/Activist Ezola Foster - 2.3% of the popular vote
