As the eight year Barnes presidency was winding down, there was still the 2016 presidential election to be played out and the two main protagonists, the Republican presidential nominee, Vice President Robert Creighton and the Democratic standard bearer Senator Howard Davenport of North Carolina were the two main actors in the rich political tapestry already being unwrapped by the ebbs and flows of the campaign. The outcome revealed the Blue-Red schism which existed in American politics, but which had been papered over by the two Barnes landslides.
Here was the map of the 2016 presidential election, which occurred on November 8 of that year.
