The best Simpsons fact I can remember is that West Springfield is four times the size of Texas.

In one episode it was said that they lived in South Kentucky.

Springfield has a beach. I'm not sure if Kentucky has one of those. At least not one that's near a large body of water.

Indeed.

But if it does exist, it's in the Pacific Northwest.

Yeah, the information given in the show is self-contradictory, but the combination of nearby mountains, ocean, etc., suggests that Groening modeled it after his native Oregon.

I remember getting really excited when I found out they're from "North Takoma," because I grew up in North Tacoma.  Screw the misspelling -- I don't recognize it as canonical.

Also, over the years, they've given completely contradictory information.  Springfield has no possible physical location if you follow all of the clues.

The Florida episode alone pretty clearly eliminates all 50 states. I don't think it would be hard to find some other episode that clearly says they do live in a state, which would immediately mean there is no possible locale.

I remember a list once eliminating all possible states that can definitely be thrown out, my reason being New Mexico. In one episode upon seeing a map Homer proclaimed "Oh, so there's a new Mexico now?" with the commentary "Because this would mean Homer would be unaware of what state he lives in, it is unlikely that Springfield is in New Mexico."

Of course Homer being unaware of what state he lives in doesn't strike me as all that odd...

It Mr. Burns who said that.

Anyhow, they did an episode set in Florida, so we can knock that off the list.

My impression has always been that it was Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri or maaaaybe Ohio, Iowa, Michigan or Wisconsin.

States that can be excluded entirely:

Not enough snow:

Hawaii
California
Nevada
Arizona
New Mexico
Texas
Louisiana
Arkansas
Mississippi
Alabama
Florida
Georgia
South Carolina

Too much snow:

Alaska

Too small:

Delaware
Rhode Island

Okay, the Simpsons' car ended up parked in New York City, and they to travel (fly) to get it.  We could probably rule out Connecticut.

You can rule out every state. It's been clearly established that they don't live in any actual state. Trying to figure out what "real" one they live in is a pointless exercise.

Thank you.  I said this pages ago.  I don't understand how this conversation is still going on.

And he also said a while ago that certain characters are named after streets in Portland, Oregon (such as Kearney, for example).

The Simpson family home at 742 Evergreen Terrace was Groening's actual childhood address, I believe.  (As were the family members' names taken from his own family, except 'Matt' became Bart.)

At first I was sure it's Springfield, Illinois, since I didn't know any other Springfield.

But-but-but, the Simpson family has been banned from Oregon!

I could be wrong, but I thought I'd heard somewhere that Springfield was chosen because there is one in every state and he was trying to make the Simpsons be from anywhere and therefore more relatable.
