I remember a list once eliminating all possible states that can definitely be thrown out, my reason being New Mexico. In one episode upon seeing a map Homer proclaimed "Oh, so there's a new Mexico now?" with the commentary "Because this would mean Homer would be unaware of what state he lives in, it is unlikely that Springfield is in New Mexico."

Of course Homer being unaware of what state he lives in doesn't strike me as all that odd...

It Mr. Burns who said that.

Anyhow, they did an episode set in Florida, so we can knock that off the list.

My impression has always been that it was Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri or maaaaybe Ohio, Iowa, Michigan or Wisconsin.

States that can be excluded entirely:

Not enough snow:

Hawaii
California
Nevada
Arizona
New Mexico
Texas
Louisiana
Arkansas
Mississippi
Alabama
Florida
Georgia
South Carolina

Too much snow:

Alaska

Too small:

Delaware
Rhode Island

Okay, the Simpsons' car ended up parked in New York City, and they to travel (fly) to get it.  We could probably rule out Connecticut.
