The Assad Army is now entering Kurdish-held areas around Manbij, because the Kurds asked them to do so.

They want them to take control there, before the Turks are coming ...

It was almost inevitable that the Kurds would reach some sort of accommodation with the Syrian regime. Trump's abandonment of them made it happen sooner and likely on worse terms.

The situation seems to be entering a stalemate of sort. The Assad regime has practically won in Syria, and the Kurds are now cooperating with his regime. But Turkey doesnt seem keen to give in and allow the rebels to be defeated. Total victory is practically impossible for both sides, and I expect a compromise peace treaty to be the end result.

So part of my likes withdrawing from Syria, the 2008 me railing against Cheney/Rumsfeld, etc. But I know that this will through the Kurds into the arms of Assad, and could give ground to Northwest jihadists

Apparently, there's massive infighting in Idlib between the so-called "rebels" of Al-Qaida and the Turkish-backed clowns. Probably good that they are killing each other off, because it will make it a bit easier for the Assad Army and the Russians to eventually take back Idlib.

In other news, ISIS is really about to be defeated in the Euphrates Valley after the Kurds made big gains. Only some 5-10 miles of ISIS-area remains there and it seems they are now leaving even this area to depart into the desert to become isolated "sleeper cells".

The so-called "caliphate" of IS will be completely destroyed in the next days.

The Kurds & Co. have just stormed the last town that IS holds (Baghuz), an area of just 2 square kilometers. This should be liberated tomorrow or so and total victory over IS can be declared by the Kurds, the US and Co. in terms of territory (some isolated sleeper cells of course will remain).

Uh, it pretty much already has been. They have not controlled any territory since 2017.

And also, it's common knowledge publicly available on Encyclopaedia Brittannica and Wikipedia:

"By November 2017, however, ISIL had lost all major territorial holdings."

"Following this major defeat, ISIL continued to lose territory to the various states and other military forces allied against it, until it controlled no meaningful territory by November 2017."

Your initial post claimed they held no territory which is false.  It is of course true that what they hold isnt meaningful its pretty much been a dozen villages for the last year, with the final offensive against them starting only like 2 months ago

Man, it's really kind of crazy how peace just spontaneously breaks out when American forces withdraw. Totally bizarre how this keeps happening over and over again.

Yeah, and in my initial post I said "pretty much", i.e. nearly, but not entirely, complete. They lost Hajin in 2018, their last capital, and they have no territory at this point other than a hardly-noticeable swath of land near the Euphrates River, which is not secure. In a word, they do not control any territory, and have not for quite some time

The mainstream media won't mention this, of course, but CSJC just destroyed another ISIS isolated stronghold.

Now we get to sit back and wait to see where the future martyrs congregate next.  I say somewhere in the Horn of Africa.

Technically there is still fighting in some holdout areas along the river, but yes the battle is won.

"White House claims victory in freeing Syria from ISIS control."

https://www.politico.com/story/2019/03/22/donald-trump-isis-syria-1232488

So, what's next ?

* keep an eye on the Islamist sleeper cells in the desert and eliminate them

* the Golan is back in the spotlight, after Trump said Israel "rightfully" owns that region

* fighting in Idlib is increasing again (both between the Islamist groups there => Al Qaida - and between them and the Syrian Army)

* Al-Hawl camp, which has swollen to 75.000 so-called "refugees" (most of them actually defeated and imprisoned Islamist fighters and their wives + kids), is experiencing significant riots. That is a massive powder keg that could soon explode, as most of the imprisoned are defeated warriors with an inferiority complex against the West, the Kurds and who else ... they remind me of the defeated German soldiers after WW1, who later became the Nazis during WW2.

* the US troop pullback and the possible abandoning of the Al-Tanf area.
