Easy, Inks and (not so) Fat Daddy TX.....opebo's engaging in a bit of excessive hyperbole now.....if we weren't talking about teachers he probably wouldn't even be involved in the discussion Wink

Well, I am preparing to begin work tomorrow morning at 9:00 am.  Again, I work 9:00-5:30 pm MT.  I am very excited about starting a fresh new job in a fresh new state!  I will probably hit the sack by 11:00 pm tonight.

Yeah.. I'm going to just let opebo keep living in his fantasy world, mainly because I know I'm right, and he's wrong.

The table provided above shows I am right - if the average starting salary country wide is $30,000, it is assuredly less in the Midwest and South (balancing out the civilized zones).  And after 15 years of work they rise on average to less than $45,000 - as I said, not really enough to raise a family.

Teachers are paid absurdly low salaries, my friend. I wouldn't blame them for actively sabotaging their 'duties' as a form of protest.

I think Opebo is right here. Considering that Bushie falls into "minimum training" category.

My friend with a masters in education is making $28,000 in his second year of teaching. He teaches in the Nashville suburbs.

Actually, opebo is not far off the mark especially for Oklahoma.  Oklahoma pays their teachers one of the worst in the nation.  Their pay is not too much higher than burger flippers at McDonalds.  No joke.  Oklahoma produces a lot of good, quality teachers, but a lot of them move to Texas because the pay there is closer to what Andrew described for his state.  It truly is sad.  I love Oklahoma, it will always be home, but the teacher pay sucks.  I don't know what Utah pays, though.

Opebo, you said that teachers get $30,000 a year and that the starting salary is well below $30,000.  In some areas, it may be below $30,000, but that's not what you said.

That table was also for minimum training.

As the other chart showed, the lowest average starting salary was $32,180 and that was for South Dakota.

Also, Jeff, they make a lot more than "burger flippers at McDonald's".  If we assume the burger flipper gets paid $8/hour and works 40 hours a week, 52 weeks a year, he'd make $16,640, less than half of what the average starting teacher makes in Oklahoma (which is $35,880).

Perhaps it was an exaggeration, but the point was they get paid poorly compared to other professions and once you consider that many of the teachers invest their own money in supplies for the classroom and for their students.

Well you can say that about any profession.  And this is a starting salary we're talking about, not the permanent salary.

I guess I just have memories growing up of a lot of our teachers fleeing to Texas for a lot better pay.

Regardless of whatever chart, I have first hand evidence that the starting salary in Tennessee is less than $30,000.

The general point - that it is a miserable job, with abysmal pay, certainly stands unassailable.

I know the starting salary was around 26-27,000 a few years ago in Missouri, because some poor unfortunates I know had to resort to it.  It is very difficult to live on such a salary - it is a subsistence - and of course in many cases they never progress to the career-topping (haha) $45,000 (itself inadequate to raise a family properly) because they leave the thankless profession long before that.

You have first hand evidence that a starting salary in one school district in Tennessee is less than $30,000.  That does not mean that THE starting salary in TN is less than $30,000.

The difference could very well be net v gross. By the time taxes, insurance, retirement, etc are withheld, you could both be right.

I had a great day at work today.  I have great coworkers and what looks to be a great job.  Tomorrow, as part of my initial training, I have a meeting in Idaho from 10:00-2:00.  It also happened today that I found out that twice a year I will be going to other regional locations for meetings and such in other parts of the Northwest United States including Sacramento and San Francisco, California; Portland, Oregon; Seattle, Washington; Boise, Idaho; Denver, Colorado and possibly the Southwest such as Los Angeles or San Diego, California; Las Vegas, Nevada; Phoenix, Arizona; Albuquerque, New Mexico; and El Paso, Texas.  The trips would most likely be in late Spring and early Fall so as not to be impacted too much by winter weather.  The trip to Idaho will count as the trip for this early Fall.  Disclaimer: Not all of these cities have actual Aetna offices (i.e. Layton, Utah), but they are locations the Company has set for a regional meeting.  Tomorrow's meeting is in Pocatello, Idaho which is 2 hours to the north of Ogden, Utah.  It's probably the closest city I will go to.  I won't know about the particular trip until about a month before.

Haha, thankfully it doesn't!

Anyway, I'm home from Idaho.  It was a really good trip into a beautiful state.  I'm just going to sit back and relax and watch some football before I hit the sack.

My paychecks, no.

Other people's checks, yes.

I think Andrew was hinting at On Company, and that's what I was mindful of when I responded.

This is hilarious! Just about 30 minutes ago, I got a phone call from... XEROX... wanting to re-offer the position they had offered me in early August in Sandy, Utah!  Of course, I'm no longer in the market, but I thought it was a hilarious call!

One quick update on Kenya.  Throughout the summer, my church, Woods Baptist Church in Choctaw, Oklahoma has been raising money to feed the orphans in October.  The goal was $1500, the deadline was September 23.  We raised the entire $1500 in July and August and now we will be able to feed an entire village in Kenya for the entire month of October.

My physical location may be Utah, but my heart is still in Kisumu, Kenya!  I look forward to going back in just 6 months!
