... using Dave's App, inspired (along with the color scale) by Lewis Trondheim's map of New York from a while back. Grey is either side under 55%, the lighter pink and green are 55-70%, the red and medium green are 70-85%, and the dark red and green (neither of which appears on the Milwaukee map) are 85+%.

The questions were in favor of the death penalty and in favor of restricting marriage to opposite-sex couples; thus "yes" is in both cases the "socially conservative" vote (with apologies to the "seamless garment" crowd).

All right, first: Milwaukee County; I'll take requests for other counties. The death penalty is on the left, and marriage is on the right.

The precincts that are pro-death penalty and against gay marriage are amusing.

Not sufficiently against the Death Penalty.

And finally somebody adopts my color scheme! Cheesy (I actually drew a few more states in that, just for my private perusal).

Yuppies. Well-maintained old houses, new condos, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Historically Polish and Italian, but not any more. Also a set of neighborhood names weirdly similar to NYC (Upper East Side, Lower East Side, Murray Hill).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neighborhoods_of_Milwaukee#Milwaukee.27s_East_Side

Oh, maybe you meant Shorewood/Whitefish Bay (the northeasternmost edge of the county). Basically the same, but richer and more established.

Green is yes and red is no; the scale is described in the first post. Given the questions, green is pro-death penalty and anti-gay marriage.

I'd like to see the heavily-Democratic counties in the northwest.

That's a part of the town of Edgerton which is mostly in Rock County. There's less than a 100 people in that tiny portion.

Total votes 2-1 against the death penalty and 3-0 for the marriage amendment - exactly as BRTD says, only its own precinct due to the weird municipal boundary crossing the county line.

Ah, right. It just stuck out a little. As does that row of subdivisions in the north; presumably not many people live there either?

There's only about 5000 people in the townships that voted to ban gay marriage. They're just typical rural townships.

It's more that those ones did that, and voted with Madison et al on the death penalty vote.

The gay marriage ban ran about 4 points better than the death penalty support statewide and did particularly in that area, the county to the north of Dane was 59% against gay marriage but only 53% in favor of the death penalty. Lots of Catholic olds in the rural areas of that part of Wisconsin.

I'd like to see the heavily-Democratic counties in the northwest.

The scale's a little awkward at the single-county level, so in each case a map of all three on the left and then a couple of insets: the middle one is Superior and the right one has Ashland at the bottom and Washburn at the top.

Death penalty:

Marriage:

I calculated the CD results from WI's website:

DP   NO%
WI-2   60.85%
WI-4   52.32%
WI-3   44.84%
WI-5   41.37%
WI-7   41.29%
WI-8   39.13%
WI-1   38.20%
WI-6   38.19%

GAY
WI-2   59.78%
WI-4   45.70%
WI-3   41.28%
WI-1   37.05%
WI-5   36.01%
WI-7   35.88%
WI-8   35.84%
WI-6   32.60%

Surprised WI-5 isn't that conservative on referenda. All CD's had the gay marriage ban fare better than the DP reinstation. I wonder what kind of voters would support the death penalty and also support gay marriage. Did any counties have the DP reinstation fare better than the gay marriage ban?

I would think favoring both the death penalty and gay marriage is currently a more popular position than opposing both.
