I'd like to see into his head to figure out if he really thought he'd stand a chance of winning against Ellmers.

The district is R+10, in North Carolina, and he's a Democrat best known for being incredibly gay. I'd say no.

It would have to be a hell of a wave.

Ellmers won by just under 18 points.

You can't completely count out anything in a wave year (I mean, Louise f'ing Slaughter almost lost) but probably not.

He could have come within like 3 points of winning.

No, Aiken was a terrible candidate. And he is a gay, so no chance in the South

Not in that seat he couldn't have. He could win seats that Generic D could win.

He couldn't even win on American Idol.

He would lose by 10 points even in a D-wave. This is what happens when a political party caters to bonehead celebrities.

He could barely get through his own primary. He never had any chance against Ellmers, and even in a 2008 like climate he would have lost by at least 9 points.

There is already a gay Republican Senator from the South. (But then again, he did underperform...)

But his is the only non-winner to have had a #1 hit (while the winner of his season had none).

No, the best he could have done was lose by single digits.

If Clay Aiken won, I think the Federal Government would have forced the district out of the US. Seriously, Aiken was a joke candidate.

Ellmers is weak, but the Dems' only real base in that district is the Concentrated Area of Relocated Yankees. Cary just isn't big enough to carry the day for the Dems.

Aiken had a TV show coming out of this whole thing, so I think he was fine winning or loosing.

Though, he can make more money since he lost, so he probably likes that more.
