Sócrates Brasileiro Sampaio de Souza Vieira de Oliveira died at 57, due to a septicemia caused by a gastrointestinal infecction. He was already with a fragilized health, due to liver cirrhosis after years of heavy drinking and smoking. He has a unique trajectory in life, as one of greatest soccer players of history and one of most intellectual activists of Brazil. He was brother of São Paulo and PSG icon Raí.
He began in soccer at Botafogo de Ribeirao Preto (RP), while studying medicine at local university, in 1974. After finishing studies, he moved to Corinthians, most popular club in Sao Paulo, where he became a idol and founded the Democracia Corintiana, where players and servants had a role at club management. After defeat of Diretas Já in 1984, he left Brazilian football and went to Fiorentina. In National Team, he played two World Cups, Spain (1982, where he was captain) and Mexico (1986). After coming back to Brazil, he played for Flamengo, Santos and ending his career at Botafogo (RP). In 2004, he got a contact as player-manager for 1 month at Garforth Town. He was also columnist to Carta Capital magazine and served as host to a TV program at cable television.

Yesterday, Corinthians got his 5th Brazilian title. Last game was a 0-0 against Palmeiras.
