Almost certainly an I/D IMO.

Yes; I think he had an outright majority in one poll.

Is there any reason to believe he might not caucus with the Democrats?

Why not? He's center right. I think he'll caucus as a Republican.

Most center-right people reside in the Democratic Party nowadays.

(From the Huffington Post) "Maine's former two-term governor, running as an independent to succeed retiring Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe, calls the GOP budget plan "a disaster" and the party's position on women's health "a mistake. He's also supporting President Barack Obama's re-election." I can't see someone like that caucusing with the Republicans. He'll probably refuse to announce who he'll caucus with until after November, but that's just to play to Maine's independent spirit. Whenever King ran for office, he always drew more support from the left than the right, and his social views (and even most of his fiscal views) put him well outside the Republican party. Ontheissues.org rates Angus King as a "Moderate Libertarian Liberal", which places him to the left of many current democratic senators.

Angus King would have been a terrific Republican politician...a decade or more ago. Now we've reached a point where people like Dick Lugar and Robert Foster Bennett are considered too liberal for that party.
