I was kind of inspired by Homelycooking and Dallas to create a thread about election results in my own home state of Washington.  However, Washington does not have township results, so I thought I might just stick to congressional numbers instead.  Wink

Here are the results for Washignton State's congressional races from 1968-1982.

BTW it's worthy to note that congressman and future senator Brock Adams (D-WA 7) resigned to become Secretary of Transportation in 1977, and was replaced by Republican Jack Cunningham in a special election.  Cunningham lost his reelection bid in the 1978 midterm elections by Democrat and future governor of Washington Mike Lowry.

Wow I didn't know Washington used to have a solidly Dem congressional delegation. Was it Jackson's popularity that helped?

Not quite.

Congressmen like Lloyd Meeks (D, WA-2), Tom Foley, Floyd Hicks (D, WA-6) and Brock Adams (D, WA-7) were all able to defeat Republican incumbents during the LBJ wave of '64 and hold their seats for many more years to come.

On top of that, Henry Jackson's reelection coattails (getting 84% of the vote) and campaigning helped Democrat Mike McCormack defeat incumbent Cathy May of Washington's 4th.  He was reelected 4 more times until he was defeated by Republican Sid Morrison in 1980, partly due to Reagan's coattails that year.

BTW, these maps and elections results came from the Almanacs of American Politics, and from Wikipedia (surprisingly).

I'll have some more maps regarding median income soon.

Edit:  Washington didn't have any real minority populations back in the day, so I'll skip the racial % map.  Tongue
