No, but my attempt to end recognition of Christmas as a federal holiday in 2007 was heartily rejected by the Senate.

I answered yes, but it depends how you define the word Christian.  If it means one who believes that Jesus Christ was the divine son of God, then no.  He was a great teacher and prophet, but just as human as the rest of us.

Ehh.. I guess I am. I mean, I was baptized and confirmed in a Roman Catholic church.. but I've lost most of my faith more than anything. If anything, I have no faith in the church, that is for sure.

Andrew, Catholic church can do that. All it is, pretty well, is the Priest saying

"Do this thing right here? AND YOU GO TO HELL"
"Oh, and this? right here? do this, AND YOU GO TO HELL"
"Oh, and that thing, over there? Yea, do any of that AND YOU GO TO HELL"
"But God LOVES you"
"Just don't ever question that... OR YOU GO TO HELL!!!!"

I was sitting in Church roughly 6-10 months ago and the Priest said (verbatim):

"If you believe that gays should be allowed to marry, you have sinned and you are going to hell. If you believe that the taking of innocent life should be legal, you have sinned and you are going to hell. If you believe that watching pornography is not a form of adultery, you have sinned and you are going to hell. You have sinned and you are going to hell, just as the gays, the baby-killers, the adulterers are going to hell..."

I was serving on the altar and in front of everyone, my jaw dropped. I could not believe that nobody spoke out in response to this bigotry. I wouldn't, because 1. I was on the altar and 2. I was 14. I became physically sick for the rest of the day. I was dumbfounded.

I'd have gotten up and walked out.

Or, laughed and said "HAHAHA, good one!"

I have always been, and still am, a Christian.

I follow the teachings of Jesus Christ, I believe what he spoke in the Bible, his preaching of love and forgiveness, and hope for all, even the lowliest. I have absolutely no respect for most of American Christianity, which is little more than superstitious perversion. I don't think the true God has any tolerance for a "Christian" church that preaches hate and homophobia and tells people they're going to hell.

See...I totally understand where you're coming from. I was raised Catholic and had to endure this sort of garbage for much of my life. I remember once my Sunday school teacher told me that only a self-hating person would "become gay". At the time I was totally indoctrinated and imbibed every word of it, but now I've become completely fed up with this sort of totally un-Christlike Christianity.

I'm currently going to the University of Alabama, a Southern college with a lot of evangelicals. I attend a local Bible study group, where I try to keep quiet about my liberal Christianity (although several people have kind of figured it out). Although I still go to Catholic churches for my family's sake (the Catholic church on campus is fairly liberal) I am more involved with the local United Methodist church.

After I move out of the Deep South I'm probably going to become United Church of Christ, or maybe Unitarian.
