Just east of Des Moines is going HARD for Santorum... with a decent chunk of votes left... He's got an edge.

I've got another $300 I can put in to the IEM for a candidate (good if they win first OR second). What's my best bet based on the county results so far?

I can't believe what we're seeing out of Marion and Jasper. Can somebody more familiar with Iowa than I am explain what it is about those counties relative to the rest of the south-and-east-of-Des Moines part of the state?

Santorum isn't even as strong as Huckabee was 4 years ago, and look how Huckabee turned out.

I was thinking of doing Santorum (I put in 200 last night when he was at $.50), but how safe of a bet is it?  It's hard for me without seeing county data.

Paul's lead is down to 2% in Polk County; Santorum is in second there now.

Much of that was from the town of Ankeny, north of Des Moines in the I-35 corridor.  Santorum did well there.  It's home to a John Deere plant and bible college.

That's where you're wrong. No Republican is more hated than John McCain by the base.

Seriously. Not only why is Santorum doing so well, but also Romney doing particularly poor there?

Probably a sign you shouldn't bet.

I assume both have plenty Evangelicals. Huckabee won them by about 50% in 2008.

Marion County (Pella) is where the Dutch decamped in a mad land rush to Sioux County: i.e., it's a Dutch influence county. If Sioux County gives a big vote to Rick (like pushing 50%), that is the best available hypothesis:  Rick's social conservatism appealed to the Dutch, who are a very different breed from those free thinking Dutch in Amsterdam.

Dubuque still has a lot to report, and Woodbury isn't even reporting. Things certainly aren't even close to being over for Romney. Very happy with how tonight is going.
