By the way, I'd never heard of this Gary Bauer guy before. How influential is he?

He has some pull among evangelicals, but not as much as a Dobson or Robertson. He ran for president in 2000 in the Republican primaries and didn't do too well in Iowa, winning only a handful of counties, but I've seen coverage of him in the past few weeks on CNN and MSNBC, so he's not irrelevant.

Gary Bauer was most influential back when he was Dobson's wing man 15 years ago.

According to uselectionatlas.org he won more votes in the 2000 Iowa caucus than Michele Bachmann did in the 2012 Iowa caucus. Wink
