The Labour candidate elected in the Blairite heyday seemed to be a personal vote, since his Labour counterpart came nowhere near matching his success.

Labour can actually attract a respectable vote in Tory areas, but it's been hidden by tactical voting, local democratic neglect, and enough shocking results for Labour over the last decade to make them credible.

Madeley, Newcastle-Under-Lyme;
Lib 47.7 (+21.7)
Lab 26.4 (-7.9)
Con 22.7 (-8.9)
UKIP 3.2 (-4.8 )

interesting! local issue or a sign of Labour's great efforts to lose Liberal refugees?

also, a nice collection of faces JGL - even if they are horribly distorted!

Wonder why the Greens didn't bother contesting Kesgrave East, after picking up a respectable 17.6% from - as far as I can see - nowhere in last year's locals?

You're just looking to be sigged. Wink

It's pretty remarkable how little impact the coalition has had on Ibstock & Heather's politics - last year's results with swings from '07.

Con 35.4% (+0.1%)
Lab 33.8% (+1.6%)
Lib 11.4% (-0.7%)
Right* 20.0% (-1.0%)

*UKIP in 2007, BNP-turn-Independent last year.

It'll also be interesting to see how big a share a Lab+Green can muster in Horsham. Cheesy

Wow, erratic movement considering what I was saying earlier and the fact Oadby's a Lib Dem fortress.  Turnout at play, or...?

First time Labour's managed double figures in Worcester Park in over a decade (but they were only a fraction away from it in 2002, with a far more competitive 7% Green vote).

It seems both Slough and Swale were decade highs (Labour) and lows (Liberals) last year - be interesting to see whether they'll be repeated tomorrow?

There was a by-election in the neighbouring ward of Fareham West in December 2010, with a 27% swing from Con to Lib and the small Labour vote further shrinking, but it remains to be seen how comparable that is.

Never really understood why voters punish a party when one of their councillors gets charged for child pornography etc in the ensuing by-election - it's not as if they'd stand a candidate knowing such a thing, and there's no possible way of screening them out.

I think you're confusing these with parliamentary by-elections (these are council elections); there's been seven parliamentary by-elections since 2010 and only one has resulted in a gain - George Galloway's Respect from Labour.

Barnet vote is delicious. Was going to conclude it was a good night for the Tories as well(!)

Don't know what's more disappointing about the Frant result - that there were no Green candidates, or that Labour actually went backwards even with their absence. Tunbridge Wells East was a pretty dire result as well.

Poor results in Herts and Hunts, but much better elsewhere.

Strong performances from Labour all over the place, there. Probably their best by-election night for a long time.

Malvern Hills, West

Green 44.3 (-4.6)
Con 29.6 (-10.4)
Ind 11.7 (+11.7)
UKIP 8.2 (+8.2)
Lab 6.1 (+6.1)

Should be (-2.9) for UKIP change, I think?

Can't we just have a General Election now? There won't be any Tory support left by 2015.

Here's hoping.

Decent set of results for Labour in general. Interesting how Warley's now a Lab-Lib marginal with the Greens syphoning a chunk off Labour, and the Liberals benefiting from doing the same with the Tories - struggle to be any different from its 2004 result (and similar following results) of Ind 27.6%, Con 23.3%, BNP 20.4%, Lib 19.9%, Lab 8.7%!

Mixed bag for Labour. A poor result in Stoke (with the disclaimer: it's a basket case - but still traditionally a Labour area), an underwhelming performance in Breckland, H&H but a strong result in Mid Forest ward (with the disclaimer: although, not an area they have much hope in winning). Personally I'd think there's more reason to be disappointed in the result in Stoke than there is to be happy about Mid Forest.

I've asked this before, but what's the deal with Residents/Ratepayers Associations? Did they fall under the anti-socialist or the Independent category in the post-war period? Presumably they vary too - I know the Solihull Ratepayers association are linked to the Taxpayers Alliance, but surely they aren't all as right-wing?

On a poor turnout though; the Liberals got 101 votes to the Greens' 85.
