The article says Canada became a nation in 1841. That's when the Canadas (Ontario & Quebec) were united. Canada became a nation in 1867.

Canada, meanwhile, became a democracy in 1848, and we are the second oldest continuous democracy in existence after the US.

Well it depends on how you define things, but I think Iceland would like to have a word with you. link (though shooting holes in that argument is pretty easy)

(and I've noticed in the past that the Euros tend to not like it when you point these things out, so expect to be yelled at or ignored)

Well I'm not much one for yelling, but I do consider it quite sad that people consider places to be democratic that decide to exclude persons without the right sex organs, or those that they have different levels of melanin, from the democratic process.

Where do you draw the line though? The US still wont let prisoners vote, and I imagine most countries are the same.

In Canada, only 2 citizens living in Canada over the age of 18 cannot vote (the Chief Electoral Officer and his Deputy). Also, citizens living abroad lose the right to vote after 5 years.

So everyone from rapists, supreme court justices, women, even Asians can vote.

Even Tories can vote, which is pretty scary.

according to wiki, the following are also related to Pocahontas:   Edith Bolling Galt Wilson, wife of Woodrow Wilson; George Wythe Randolph; Admiral Richard Byrd; Virginia Governor Harry Flood Byrd; fashion-designer and socialite Pauline de Rothschild; former First Lady Nancy Reagan; actor Glenn Strange; and astronomer and mathematician Percival Lowell.

can't get much more American than being related to Pocahontas!

Really depends on how youd define 'Democracy' and 'continuous', I think.

Yeah, drawing the line is difficult. And I'm not sure I have a definitive answer; but I am quite content to say that excluding more than half of the population (by accounts of gender and race) leaves you on the wrong side of the line.
