Blue: Eastern Washington

Dark red: Amount of Seattle needed to cancel out McCain's margin in Eastern Washington

Bright red: Additional Seattle (in addition to dark red, that is) needed to cancel out Rossi's 2010 margin in Eastern Washington.

Yeah, they have a major (and clearly justifiable) inferiority complex.

New York City vs. McCain Country:

Obama's margin in NYC is about the same as McCain's margin in all of those blue states combined.

Eastern Washington is also a lot more Democratic than Seattle is Republican.

Green: Counties won by John McCain
Red: Amount of Clark County needed to cancel out McCain's margin in the counties he won

Illinois and New York would both also be good demonstrations, I'm sure, but this computer isn't wanting to load the bigger states on DRA.

Green = Michele Bachmann's district + exurban parts of MN-02 and MN-03.
Black = portion of Minneapolis needed to neutralize McCain's margin.
Red = portion of St. Paul needed.

Blue is McCain counties in 2008; red is the amount of San Francisco that neutralizes their margin. Interestingly, the blue area is less white (48.6%, 53.2% VAP) than the red area (51.6%, 53.3% VAP).

McCain's margin in the green rural parishes (about 90,000 votes) is the same as Obama's margin in Orleans parish.

Blue: Counties won by McCain in 2008
Red: Approximately one-square-mile size portion of the Upper West Side needed to neutralize McCain's margin.

Just in case you can't see it on the main map, here's a zoom:

The rule of thumb is that the Dems need a margin of 500 K in Cook to offset the rest of the state. In 2010 Kirk held Giannoulias to 450 K and won by 60 K. Quinn got a 500 K cushion and won by 30 K.

Here's Michigan. Blue is every McCain county, the purple bit is the portion of Detroit needed to cancel that out.
