Electorally speaking probably not too bad of a decision for Democrats.

But they need a really good candidate now, really fast.

I think Roy Cooper would be the strongest candidate. What do you think ?

Roy Cooper? Meh. I think if the dems want to run someone good, I'd pick Heath Shuler. I could be wrong, but I feel like if this man run, he could actually take the election. Certainly couldnt go after him for being afraid to stand up to big momma Pelosi.

I instantly thought of Miles when I saw this on Google.

Hopefully Democrats can't get a good recruit, which could further impact Obama's chances in NC.

It probably won't affect Obama. He pulled Perdue to victory in 2008.

-Erskine Bowles
-Roy Cooper
-Heath Shuler
-Brad Miller (now that he's retiring)

could make the election interesting.

Roy Cooper has announced he won't run for Governor.

I say we draft Larry Kissell. Shuler and McIntyre at least have a fighting chance in their districts; I really don't see hoe Kissell holds his new district anyway.

PPP is saying that the Democrats should run Erskine Bowles:

"We've tested a number of Democratic alternatives to Bev Perdue over the last year and Bowles was the only one who didn't trail McCrory. In October we found the two tied at 42%....

...In 2004 Bowles was burdened by a Kerry/Edwards ticket that was very weak in North Carolina and lost the state by 12 points.  What people might forget is that Bowles lost by only 5 points, outrunning the Presidential ticket by 7.  The Presidential landscape in North Carolina has changed dramatically since 2004 and with the state looking like a dead heat if Bowles could outrun Obama by just 2-3 points he'd probably find himself in the Governor's Mansion."

Oh please, McCory would wipe the table with Bowles.

With Shuler we'd lose a House seat but he'd be incredibly formidable for the Governorship. And I think holding the governor's mansion is a hell of a lot better than one house seat.

Bowles was ahead for the entire 2004 Senatorial race until the last few weeks when the Republicans came home.  This is good news for the Democrats.  Similar to VA, the suburban/urban areas are growing faster and the Democrats are more formidable than ever here.

North Carolina hasn't elected a Republican governor since 1988 (an incredibly long losing streak). Why are the Dems suddenly lacking any backups to replace Bev Perdue? Their gubernatorial candidates have outperformed the national nominee in every single contest since 1992 and they have quite a few centrist current and former congressmen who'd ostensibly be competitive candidates.

Its because McCrory is an especially strong candidate.

If he wasn't running again, I'm pretty sure Perdue would be running for reelection. PPP tested a few non-McCrory Republicans against her and she was ahead.

McCrory has the ability to outrun the GOP Prez candidate by 10 points or so in Mecklenburg county, which makes it difficult to beat him. And he would have outrun the ticket by even more without the Obama surge their of minority straight ticket Dem voters.

Didn't he get like 70% in the 9th district in 2008, while McCain got 55%?

The only way to beat him is to get rural voters who don't much care for moderate city boys to defect to the Democrat, the McCain/Perdue voters, basically.
