This whole thing of the mormans and their planets, how does it work?

I tried once to understand it, I gave up.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3BqLZ8UoZk

from what I can gather, human beings become gods when they die and are assigned a planet in the cosmos to rule over...

As someone who is neither Christian nor Mormon... I can honestly say I don't see how Mormonism has ANYTHING to do with Christianity.  It's like saying Forrest Gump and Cast Away are the same movie.

Neat, I didn't know the Mormons did that. Still not as funny as the planets thing, how they believe the book of mormon came about and was translated, polygamy, their revelations about the humanity of black people, or my personal favourite - magical underpants.

All religions can pretty easily be made to seem ridiculous of course. Mormonism is so easy to see through that it becomes painful to realise it has a serious following.

considering their beliefs, I would have thought less of them if they hadn't.

That is a very unique way of looking at it.  Seriously, I'm gonna have to ruminate on that one.

Having religion doesn't excuse you from criticism.  Trust me, I get lip from my atheist friends all the time.

You know what's less normal than religious beliefs? Hint: Go ask Santorum.

Bigotry against Mormons is just as ugly as any other type of bigotry.

wat

No one's forcing Mormons to be Mormon (except other Mormons). Other types of bigotry are worse because you don't choose to be black, or Hispanic, or gay, or Jewish (culturally), or....

Where is the victim in Mormonism?

By the way, Cynthia Nixon says that she is "gay by choice." You should have a talk with her.

By the way you just inadvertently touched on a very interesting topic.  Just because some gay people may be genetically gay doesn't mean everyone who acts gay is genetically gay.  I find it fascinating that no one ever points this out.  Is every blond born blond?  Are Wiggers black?

PS I hope I don't get sactioned for using the term Wiggers.

I try not to hate on people for their private religious beliefs, and Romney, unlike most Republicans, has been a saint about not bringing his into the public sphere (can't imagine why...), but this kind of stuff is so batty that it really makes one question his judgement. But whatever. Not like I was going to vote for him anyway.

The level of ignorance and bigotry on this board is truly astounding.

Criticize a public figure all you want for his political views, but don't delve into matters which obviously you know nothing about.

I find this practice silly and ridiculous, but can't be offended. Really not any worse than baptizing babies if you think about it. Which mind you I don't approve of, but find pretty harmless.

That's because gay people are rightfully insistent that their attractions weren't a conscious decision whereas others believe they've fallen victim to unnatural desires. Anything less than that is seen as giving bigots a foothold. But sometimes I do believe the lgbt community would do well to admit there are gray areas instead of acting so condescending. I mean Christ, it's as though they're ignorant of the b in their own acronym.. but that is quite off topic.

I wonder if Protestants view Mormonism like Catholics view Protestantism. This thread seems to point in that direction.

There are 200,000 valid reasons to not like Romney. His religion isn't one of them, and it's kind of sad to see more anti-Mormon shit go down on the Atlas than in the GOP as a whole.

Obviously, the issue of tolerance should hardly rest on whether it is a choice or not. I don't think it's particularly reasonable to view sexual desires as chosen. Obviously, hardly anyone would be gay if it were a choice (given all the problems it typically creates for a person, especially in conservative societies). It also, actually, makes weak evolutionary sense, imo.

I guess it may be affected by environment though.

Why can't someone dislike Romney because of his religion?

Yeah, because if Romney converted his dead father-in-law to Catholicism or Buddhism, everybody would be cool with that.

Where is the victim in homosexuality?

Cynthia Nixon isn't normally my first source for gender theory.

Intolerance and religious bigotry are so ugly.

They led to the deaths of 6,000,000 Jews.

These guys are bringing down religion in the public square faster than the atheists (see also Rick Perry's presidential "campaign")

Keep it up

What a stupid statement. Due to the implications that all Protestants view Mormonism the same way as well as that all Catholics view all Protestants the same way.

Someone needs to create dontconvertmemitt.com where people can proactively state for the record that they dont want to be baptised as a mormon after death
