I alternately laugh at how ridiculous it looks and feel mildly creeped out about how much like a cult it looks.

If it is to good music with a catchy beat, why not?  Catch the spirit baby!  If I were ever forced to attend a service, I assure you I would be going to a black church.

What do you think of this? It's not church, but it is Christian music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FFFHmV71AOo

So what? This also looks ridiculous. That doesn't stop me from doing it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SgL7Fh6ZjnI

I would view any activity during church other than exiting with alacrity negatively.

So I met with my grandmother yesterday after church. I mentioned how it was our special Christmas service and was quite different than most weeks and how because of the many people who don't normally come and different music there wasn't a whole lot of hand raising and it didn't happen until the end. She then went on about how much she he hates if she was ever in a church where people did that and if it ever happened she would never go back and when asked if she ever saw people jumping around she said no and if she ever did she would probably leave that church right then and never return.

*sigh* olds...

Coincidentally, so do Mormons like myself. Well, okay, it isn't quite voting (for example, its called "sustaining"), but we basically raise our hands in a voting-esque manner to show our support for members of the ward being "called" to various positions. We do the same for the prophet of the church and the apostles. I've never seen someone raise their hand during the "are there any opposed" part, so it's not really a vote.

I've never heard of voting during a church service before. What's your affiliation?

I attended the confirmation of my cousin last Sunday. He and his family go to a church which has charismatic tendencies. Not only was a very long time of the service dedicated to the singing of very modern worship songs (there was a band that performed these songs in English and many churchgoers joined in - why couldn't they find songs in German?), but some church members actually got up from their chairs and raised their hands. Coming from a small, fairly traditional church where we sing German versions of songs such as "It Is Well with My Soul", "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" or traditional German church songs like "Grosser Gott, wir loben dich", I felt awkward and weird. I don't condemn the practice of handraising per se but it doesn't appeal to me personally.
