Both of them are sound though poorly written by modern sensibilities.  Also one needs to be careful applying them.

The core of both opinions is that the government power to criminalize certain acts of commission cannot be vetoed by personal religious beliefs.

Of course, if one tried to apply this to government power to criminalize acts of omission then it would give government the power to require people to engage in activities contrary to their religious beliefs, which the First Amendment prohibits.

It is funny how the Mormons always seem to get a revelation at just the right time! All though the Lord waited a little too long regarding the black priesthood thing.
