Oh wow, how stupid of me . Because I couldn't find any polling from Kansas, I used the 2008 results as a rubric--copy/pasting them into the post, plugging in the names of the candidates from my TL, and fiddling with the results as needed. Apparently on that one I forgot to put Romney's name in. Thanks for pointing that one out, though. Will change immediately.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Virginia) 375 delegates
Representative Ron Paul (R-Texas) 177 delegates
Former Senator Rick Santorum (R-Pennsylvania) 22 delegates

Prior to winning the Illinois primary, Romney also gained a majority of delegates at the Missouri caucus on March 17 and all of the Puerto Rico primary's 23 winner-take-all delegates on March 18.

10:31pm, Peoria, Ill.--Former U.S. House Speaker and 2012 presidential contender Newt Gingrich has passed away at the age of 69 after being shot by an assailant mere moments after conceding the Illinois primary to top rival Mitt Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts.

Romney stated, "It is truly a regrettable event that a man of such pivotal importance in the conservative movement and in American history has had to pass at this time and in such a fashion. I know that my prayers are certainly with his wife Callista and his two daughters."

Fellow rival Ron Paul, a Texas congressman and leader of the libertarian faction of the GOP, said, "It is really a terrible thing to have somebody like Newt die in this way, and I hope his family heals soon."

Rick Santorum, a former Pennsylvania senator and 2012 candidate who withdrew from the race in February to endorse Romney, said, "I feel for Newt's family, and I'm praying for them so that they may find the strength to overcome this challenge. And, you know, it was only a matter of time before these glitter-bombers got violent. I think this is terrible."

President Obama is expected to speak from the White House very soon.

Pundits cannot help but note that the presidential race will now be in a total state of disarray. So many questions are being asked. Among them: when will it be appropriate for Romney and Paul to start campaigning again? How will the upcoming Louisiana, Maryland, Texas, D.C., and Wisconsin primaries turn out? Will Gingrich cruise to victory on sympathy? Where will Gingrich's delegates go? And more...

The RNC votes to release all of Gingrich's delegates, allowing them to vote however they choose. Some pundits call this a blatant pro-Romney move, as the vast majority of Gingrich's delegates will naturally choose Romney over Paul. However, immediately preceding the announcement the delegates are silent. Most hypothesize that they're waiting until April 3 to cast their votes.

All of Gingrich's delegates flee to Romney, with the exception of Louisiana's 24, one from Alabama, and one from Mississippi. Those delegates vote for Buddy Roemer, and are able to keep Romney one delegate away from becoming the nominee.

Mitt Romney announces that Luis Fortuño will be his running-mate. Fortuño, the 51 year old governor of Puerto Rico, comes entirely out of left-field but is still applauded as a smart choice. Fortuño is Hispanic, is to the right of Romney, and exhibits a perfect balance between youth and experience.

The Republican National Convention is held in Tampa Bay, Florida. New Jersey governor Chris Christie, the keynote speaker, and vice-president nominee Luis Fortuño draw far more applause than Governor Romney. Other speakers include John McCain, Indiana governor Mitch Daniels, and former President George W. Bush.

September 3-6, 2012

The Democratic National Convention is held in Charlotte, North Carolina. President Obama and Vice-President Biden are renominated with little ado, although antiabortion candidate Randall Terry stage small protests outside the Time Warner Cable Arena and the Bank of America Stadium. The keynote address is delivered by former DNC chair and 2012 Senate candidate Tim Kaine of Virginia. Other speakers include State Secretary Hillary Clinton, former President Bill Clinton, and New York governor Andrew Cuomo.
