I'm a little surprised that Paul is doing so poorly here.

I think it's time for Newt to step aside and pass on the Not-Romney torch to Santorum

LOL, Romney loses the general election by 29 points, which is better than the other clowns would do against Obama.

Can't see how he'd survive a Romney media assault here, but interesting nonetheless.

More than that, there's the question of how one can use a poll taken today to predict an outcome for a primary that's four months from now.   Who the heck knows what the race will look like in four months?  Four months ago, Cain was battling Romney for first place in national polls.

The poll is more interesting as a generic indicator of the breadth of Santorum's surge.

Independents aren't allowed to vote.

Anyways, this shows exactly what I would expect if Santorum gains momentum nationwide (which he obviously has). Romney will win the Bay Area, no surprise there. But people will be surprised just how far right, and in many cases socially conservative, the Republican electorate is in Southern California. Remember the cheering for people getting killed by the state of Texas happened in California. Romney should do fine along the coast, but he could get creamed inland, even in many parts of LA and Orange county. And he will get destroyed in the inland empire and the Central Valley. Should be interesting.

Where the audience at the GOP debate in the Reagan Library cheered over the fact that Texas has executed so many people when Rick Perry was asked by the moderator (do not remember which moderator)

Got it. Thanks. Though I'd note support for capital punishment has always been a rare streak of social conservatism popular in CA.

The republican electorate there is pretty conservative. Southern California used to have a very conservative electorate. The old republicans there are still like that and have more influence over the republican party than you would think. The more socially moderate but fiscally conservative people are independents now and they don't get to vote.

I'll buy that. Not unlike the mass exodus of moderate independents from the SE PA GOP, perhaps.
