Screw it Americans

One of these songs might be offensive, and pls don't translate. And no I don't actually listen this, but I've been to places where they ended up playing these types of songs (not voluntary, long live peer pressure!). DavidB or other Dutch posters probably know in which region I live now lol.

Other shining examples of Dutch cultural delights
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_swivbEsD50
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQf6nh39Tik

(second song is actually good btw).

I repeat: DON'T TRANSLATE.

I don't actually like these songs, but I just felt like derailing an Atlas thread with Dutch crap Tongue. I will come with a serious list later. 12 year old kids getting influenced by these kinds of songs (mainly referring to the first song on the second list) is a real problem btw, in retrospect I probably shouldn't have posted this here lol.

Damn, one of these songs features Jack Chiraq. Atlas has found it's new favourite song Tongue.

^This is one of the ones I almost instantly thought of after posting.

Also while a lot of these lists are pretty good, Crabcake's is excellent.

Way more than 10, but here's a somewhat concise list of some of my all-time favorites (in no particular order)

My Heart Will Go On (Celine Dion)
Because You Loved Me (Celine Dion)

In The Arms of The Angel (Sarah McLachlan)
There Goes My Life (Kenny Chesney)
Fifteen (Taylor Swift)
When You Were Mine (Dixie Chicks)
Something in Red (Lorrie Morgan)
The Fool (Lee Ann Womack)
She's in Love With the Boy (Trisha Yearwood)

I'll Never Get Over You Getting Over Me (Expose)
Heaven is a Place on Earth (Belinda Carlisle)
Free Fallin' (Tom Petty)
Sister Christian (Night Ranger)
I Would Do Anything for Love (Meatloaf)
I Knew I Loved You (Savage Garden)

At the Beginning (Richard Marx & Donna Lewis/Anastasia)
You'll Be in My Heart (Phil Collins/Tarzan)
Reflection (Christina Aguilera/Mulan) - this song was really therapeutic when I was coming to terms with my sexuality during my teenage years

And, of course, as is standard for any respectable gay man when listing favorite songs:
"Dancing Queen" (ABBA)

Boom Boom...don't really care who does it, I usually pick John Lee Hooker live or the Animals album version.
RHCP's Apache Rose Peacock
Rolling Stones' Sympathy for the Devil
The Who's I'm One
The Animal's It's My Life
Wish You Were Here
More Than A Feeling
I'm Leaving Now the Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard version link

that's enough

Also a freedom list. I would've picked different Animals and The Who songs tho.

1. Lady in Black (Uriah Heep)
2.) Mr. Vain (Culture Beat)
3.) Sunshine Day (Osibisa) (this would be my campaign song if I were to run for anything)
4.) Brother Louie (Modern Talking)
5.) The living Daylights (Aha)
6.) What is love (Haddaway)
7.) Sweet Dreams (La Bouche)
8.) Hit the ground running (Alice Morton)
9.) Sky (Sonique)
10.) Be my lover (La Bouche)

Trapped in the Early 90's. You would have loved it in Japan - circa 1992-95. Juliana's Tokyo.

What do you think of older Italo disco? Was it before your time?

Or about German synth pop groups like Propaganda or Alphaville that were big in discos but also on the charts?

BTW, The Living Daylights is a great track - and the OST album in my opinion is the last great Barry soundtrack before he got all moody in the final years of his career.

I do better with albums or acts, songs just feels so arbitrary since there are so many of them. I'll keep it to one per artist and stick to rock/pop songs (no jazz) to make it simpler.

Bohemian Rhapsody- Queen
No Surprises- Radiohead
Strawberry Fields Forever- The Beatles
The Rain Song- Led Zeppelin
How Soon is Now- The Smiths
Gimme Shelter- The Rolling Stones
Beetlebum- Blur
Shangri-La- The Kinks
Teenage Dream- T-Rex
All the Young Dudes- Mott the Hoople

3. Converge
4. Dance Gavin Dance
5. Death Grips
6. August Burns Red
7. Kendrick Lamar
8. My Chemical Romance
9. Enter Shikari
10. Run The Jewels

What would your jazz list be?

And cool to see T-Rex (& Mott the Hoople) on your list. I love glam/art rock 70's and Marc Bolan was such a great live presence.

I definitely like the Smiths as well. Morrissey & Marr were legends together - William It Was Really Nothing, Headmaster Ritual, Reel Around the Fountain, Bigmouth Strikes Again, the list goes on. Sometimes it is better a band does not get back together in some ways... right?

In addition to it being hard to compare it to rock/pop, Jazz is even more album centric, the songs are often so long, and are often covers of standards, so I don't even think of jazz artists in terms of songs at all, just albums. So for top ten Jazz albums I'd say-

1. My Favorite Things- John Coltrane
2. A Love Supreme- John Coltrane
3. Giant Steps- John Coltrane
4. Bitches Brew- Miles Davis
5. Kind of Blue- Miles Davis
6. Free Jazz- Ornette Coleman
7. Porgy & Bess- Miles Davis
8. Out to Lunch!- Eric Dolphy
9. The Shape of Jazz to Come- Ornette Coleman
10. Headhunters- Herbie Hancock

I'm a huge fan of the dramatic glam rock ballads, and those are my two favorites (even more than anything Bowie did like Life on Mars or Space Oddity) and I had to have a couple of them on there.

Agree on The Smiths. They definitely went out on top.

I'm not a huge music fan; most of what I know comes from the radio.

Here are ten random songs, in approximately chronological order:

The Mamas and the Papas - "California Dreamin'"
Diana Ross and the Supremes - "You Keep Me Hanging On"
Simon and Garfunkel - "Cecilia"
Bonnie Tyler - "Total Eclipse of the Heart"
Madonna - "Borderline"
The B-52's - "Love Shack"
The Red Hot Chili Peppers - "Under the Bridge"
Ricky Martin - "Livin' la Vida Loca"
Green Day - "Holiday"
Gnarls Barkley - "Crazy"

In no particular order

"You Have More Friends Than You Know"
"The Sound of Silence"
"Happy Together"
"Stabat Mater" (by Dvorak; first and last movements)
"O, Holy Night"
"You'll Never Walk Alone"
"Bridge Over Troubled Water"
"I'll Make Love To You"
"Sit Down, You're Rockin' the Boat"
Title song from "Mame"

Mark, thank you for making my list look just a little less dated.
