Not at all surprising. Same poll showed Obama up heavily of course; its just that Baldwin is an extremist.

Good thing Obama isn't an extremist.

It would be difficult to describe him as such given how he got 69 million votes.

Did they include any Republican primary polling between Neumann and Thompson?

For some voters, sure it is.

Everything but. Thompson has a 2-1 advantage in name recognition and the TP vote is split between he and Fitzgerald, so I'd expect a Thompson primary lead as well.

Baldwin: She's one of the most liberal House members. She's running statewide in a D+2 state. I think Neumann could also beat her but the race would be uncomfortably close for the GOP.

Name recognition with Thompson. Once Obama gears up in campaign mode, this will be top tier race, but I rather have anyone but Thompson as the nominee.

Ever since Baldwin jumped in the race, I've said she's too liberal for the state. I think she'd lose to Thompson but squeak out a win against Neumann.

Kohl in the early days was the right fit for the state but he leaned like Feingold leftward and had to leave the Senate because of the 2010 election.  Let's hope that even Thompson is the nominee,  he doesn't win the seat.

Kohl would have won reelection easily.

I think it has more to do with how left-wing she is rather than her sexuality. Obama looks like a moderate compared to her.

That is, of course, because Obama is a moderate.

In all honesty, though, Baldwin has a tough time here, not despite but perhaps because of the fact that Thompson is like seventy years old and utterly bland.

Baldwin(D-WI) is the Midwestern Chris Coons.
Looking at the 2010 DE US Senate Race. Polls showed Mike Castle-R leading Coons-D. Coons-D leading O'Donnell-R. O'Donnell-R won the GOP nomination..etc Coons-D is Senator for life.
2012 WI US Senate Race. Republican primary includes Thompson-moderate elder statesman former Governor, Neumann-moderate to conservative former Congressman, Fitzgerald-extreme conservative State Legislator. Neumann wins the nomination because he is conservative enough for the Tea Party but moderate enough for Republican leaning Independents. Baldwin-D defeats Neumann-R in the general election by a single digit margin due to Obama-D coattails. Obama-D is going to carry WI by a high single digit/low double digit margin.

If Thompson wins the primary, I think he'll have an easy time winning this race. Neumann would make it very close, though he'd still be favored, methinks.

I'm surprised by how many people here consider Thompson unbeatable. He hasn't held elective office for more than a decade, he is old, his fire in the belly is questionable and during his disastrous presidential campaign, as well as his current senatorial one, proved himself to be a gaffe machine.
Personally I will not be surprised if he doesn't make it out of the primary.

I think Neumann would also win against Baldwin too though, since even though he lacks the background that Thompson has with WI voters he is a good fit for the state overall. I mean Ron Johnson is much more conservative then Neumann is and if he can just come out of no where to oust someone like Feingold then Neumann can surely can beat Baldwin.

The only Republican I would consider unelectable so far in this race would be Fitzgerald the Tea Party fellow, although I know very little about him and his views.

Feingold-D is a lackluster campaigner. He refuses to play dirty - raise and spend soft money contribution. (Feingold's 1998 re-election race against a Neumann-R which Feingold narrowly won). Baldwin-D like Feingold-D is going to face tough general election campaigns every 6 years. However Baldwin-D is not going to make the same errors Feingold-D has been making during his Senate re-election campaigns. Baldwin-D will accept assistance from third party organizations.
