They are the absolute worst. They have feared and tried to bully out every single innovation in technology related to media purely to feed their own selfish interests, and to defend a business model they expect everyone else to bend around.

This was an interesting read, but I wish I could find the graphic that went along with this information somewhere. The movie industry has most of their profits coming from sources they once claimed would kill the industry. And they've claimed that many many times.

Their ratings system needs to be abolished ASAP. This became evident during the The King's Speech "controversy" where it was discussed whether the film should be re-cut/censored in order to obtain a rating below "R".

And what replaces it if it goes away?  The MPAA ratings system for all its flaws and quirks is still an improvement over what preceded it.  BluRay's rated by a Wal-Mart devised system?  The amazon.com rating system?  The mass marketers have been even more skittish over media content than the film and music industry have been.

The rating system shouldn't be abolished but it should be made clearer that it's advisory in character and the attitudes towards sex and violence need to be equalized.

The rating system isn't why the MPAA is scum, but the MPAA is in fact scum. Marokai articulated why pretty well.

Emphasis on "advisory".

My parents took me to R-Rated flicks when I was like ten.  I didn't end up being a total f***ed up psycho.

In any case, Colin Firth uttering the word f**k in a Academy Award-winning historical drama shouldn't be reason for a "R" rating.

For comparison: In Germany it was rated "0" which basically is the equivalent to a "G" under the current MPAA system.

Which proves that rating systems are almost always completely random and arbitrary.
