the post World War II era?

In my opinion there are two I can think of:

1958 - this is the election where the urban north finally abandoned the GOP once and for all

1974 - this IMO was the beginning of the Democratic party as we know today and pretty much locked the GOP out of a congressional majority for the next 20 years. This signaled the end of the old dixiecrat congressman controlling all the committees and the beginning of an influx of a lot of younger more liberal congressman who would gradually work their way up the seniority ladder such as Waxman or Miller.

You forgot 1994, which brought the South into the congressional GOP fold and rendered the House a swingable body. I'd say '58 and '94 are tied for 1st with '74 at 2nd.

1992 yr of women which brought first female candidate Carol Mosley to senate that helped put Barack on path to prez and help usher in Bill Clinton. First Dem prez since 1976.

Easily 1994.  Ended the Democrats control of the House and Republicans have controlled the House for 14 of the 18 years since.

Actually after 1994, the South was still about 50/50.

Between these 15 states, the Republicans had 76 seats and the Democrats had 75.
