As much as I hate to second BRTD's obsessions, I have to admit it : I found this website to be absolutely, amazingly, crazily brilliant. And addictive as sh*t.

To be short, I found a link to one of these "tropes" in a thread about Russian elections : I followed it, read the article, read the cases of shows or other productions for which the trope was relevant, followed the links leading to another trope, read it, read the examples, went to another trope, etc. This had happened to me before, but usually other business had avoided my spending too much time ther. This time, unfortunately, I found myself with nothing better to do (and having to wait for Michigan results to come up). So I continued... I've spent at least four hours (but it might be five or six : I don't know exactly when I began) on this website. I just couldn't stop following the links that led me to new articles and so on. Eventually, at 2AM, I painfully managed to hit the "close" button of my tab.

Now I feel like a f**king idiot and a no-lifer, having wasted an entire evening reading some sh*t in the internet, having done nothing productive, having learnt nothing useful, having had no social interaction. And my eyes hurt, too, of course.

So, bottom-line :
- People who write this stuff are geniuses.
- I shall never, ever, follow another link to a TV Trope.

Oh. One of my friends said the exact same thing last month.
And I agree with both of you.

Two in the morning? Come on. That's a normal bedtime.

Come now, we don't always have to appear bitter toward popular things on the internet.

I'm not trying to appear bitter.  Three tens-of-thousands-of-posts-long threads on SA chronicling in intricate detail every little horrible thing on that vile pedophile haven have exposed me to more horrors than I could reasonably describe.  Again, burn it to the ground.

I can't decide between getting upset at this continued hoity toity persona you and others have, or just dismiss this entire phenomenon as something that I will never be truly able to understand, so I'll just say "Okay, sure, whatever" and leave it at that. I think TVTropes is fine and amusing and actually useful for critiquing media at times, and some people need to get over themselves and turn the arbitrary irony-hating-irony down from eleven. I will now move on.

I've never really understood the appeal of it.  Sure, I get the concept and everything, but I just don't really get why it's considered so fascinating or addictive.

Oh, so it's a common phenonenon ? I feel somewhat reassured.

Two in the morning? Come on. That's a normal bedtime.

That's not much the hour, as much as the amount of time spent. It's not like I even went to bed a 2, anyways : serious Michigan results came at 3-4... Tongue

To be fair, that's at all not the kind of articles I have read.

Some of it's great. Other stuff, not so much. But yeah, Lewis Trondheim-approved website.

I love TVTropes, but I have to limit my time on it or I end up wasting HOURS on the place.

TV Tropes is amusing and I like to see which tropes are in the media I consume sometimes.

The Mikado is quite correct about that travesty of a site.
