Absolutely.  I support, in as many cases as possible, the subordination of the outdated nation-state concept to international federations and the end of ridiculous notions of national sovereignty.

Why do you want to replace national soverignty with the surely MORE ridiculous concept of European nationalism?

As an American you might not be aware of it, but that's what the EU is. It's no less xenophobic, history-romanticizing or war-mongering than the old European nations. The main difference is that it has no democratic or historical legitimacy whatsoever and has severely flawed institutions.

Yeah, staunch europhile here.

No. EU is a socialist garbage that kills national sovereignty.

The EU is a lot of bad things, Socialist is however most certainly not one of them. If there is one thing the European Union has actually been good for it's force free market capitalism and competition. We are even far ahead of certain places in America on stuff like right to work since EU legislation and court precedent enforce right to work in all the 27. (To the horror of Swedish unions, and the delight of myself)

The real horror being that a weird bit of US politspeak like 'right to work' could be used in an unironic way by a non-American.

Call it whatever you want. It's still a corner-stone of European Labour Law.

I'm really not sure at this point. Earlier I would definitely have said yes, but in practice I'm not sure it's entirely viable. It's in the air to me. At this point I'd put in my tepid endorsement with an eye towards dwelling on its past struggles as well as those in the years to come.

EU as it stands today sucks and is pretty much useless (or at least not nearly as useful as it could be). It remains that Europe, without a real federation, is bound to economic and social decline. Either we overcome our differences and start cooperating, or we'll fall together (Germany comprised).

Were I European, I'd be opposed to the European Union, which I feel is undemocratic and totally devoted to the project of free market capitalism.

The EU as an institution is desirable but the way it is currently run and structured is a disaster and beyond sh**tty. But otherwise I'm a big fan of post-sovereignty, and I don't see any contradictions between post-sovereignty and my regionalism.

How exactly has the EU been war-mongering?

One of the EU goals is to become a respected world player by military intervention. Europhiles are always lamenting the lack of war (the Americans intervened in Bosnia just because we lacked military muscles, it was our backyard, blabla).

The European army that we are moving towards is likely to be used for things like those neo-colonialist adventures in Africa that the French are always so keen about.

Of course, I'm not claiming that this is all THAT war-mongering. Then again, neither are the independent European nations of today. Smiley

Not really, though would be very heavily context-dependent.

Right now, I don't know. Before the crisis I was very, ver pro-EU. I have to think about it.

I like some things about it, like freedom of movement, and the EU probably needs to be more active in stopping illegal immigration, but on other things it's too centralized and I don't exactly like the idea of an EU superstate, but that being said I'd prefer reform to dissolution.

If we're talking supporting NATO, the EU, the euro, central authority, and pivoting toward Cold War 2.0 no.

If we're talking European decentralized government (Switzerland), secession (Catalonia), and increased economic freedom in places like Estonia and Liechtenstein then I am pro-Europe.

Flawed as an institution, but what it stands for, as well as the fact that is probably our best hope of responding to globalisation and race-to-the-bottom capitalism makes it excellent

Pro-European, absolutely. Still very critical of the European Union, though I am much more aware of its upsides than, say, a year ago.

Definitely, and I support a (very gradual) increase of European unity up to a level of a federation.

I'm very critical of the European Union (I was a soft brexit supporter, support massive reforms to EU structure etc...), but I wouldn't say I want to see it collapse. I support having free-market based economic organizations and/or strong defense pact organizations, but the EU is very corrupt and has anti-democratic tendencies.

I don't like most of Europe's political spectrum and the policies that dominate many areas of it. There are only a handful of countries where I could partially or fully feel comfortable politically.

I support maintaining and strengthening America's relationships with European allies, so in that sense I am very Pro-Europe. I also believe Europe has amazing history and amazing culture.

So, I'll moderate hero it and say that while I'm very critical of Europe from a political and ideological standpoint I do not let my political criticisms cross over into personal view of Europe.

TL'DR: HP politically, FF personally.

I am not going to lock this thread, because your revival of it pertains to a topic that remains of interest and relevant. But you should be very constrained when it comes to reviving old threads, and when in doubt, do not do it. I locked another thread that you revived that was no longer topical. Folks are reporting your "necro" posting. Thanks.

Yes. The Europeans have by far come up with the best solution to international relations. If only Asia would follow their path...

Same here. If I were European, I would support more centralization of the EU government until we were all unified into the strongest country on Earth, and wouldn't have to listen to what the U.S. says anymore
