Absolutely. I guess you could call him the Che Guevara of the 19th century. I would've definately sided with his milita if possible.

Unlike Che Guevara, however, Brown was more than a little mad. Worse Smiley he was a horsethief.
Knowing only what most people at the time did, yes I guess I would have supported him. But that's about it.
What's that last letter say...
(trying to quote from memory)
"It has long been my conviction that the crimes of this guilty land will never be purged away, but with blood. I had, as I know think vainly, flattered myself that, without very much bloodshed, it could be done."
I think the part before the first "that" is wrongly remembered.
Anyways, prophetic words.

Edit due to recall improvements.

John Brown wasn't crazy, he just wasn't thinking like normal people would.  He certainly would have been pleased by the Civil War.  An interesting what-if, is what-if there had been no John Brown?  Mr. Brown was not responsible for the Republican victory in 1860, but the feeling he engendered ensured that the South went out.  History would have been a lot calmer than it was in real life.  Better? That depends on your point of view.

John Brown was a failed businessman, wanted in 15 states for running away on debts, who killed innocent men and did it in the name of Christ.

No, I wouldn't of supported him.

I support his goal but not the means.  Murdering men in their beds and hitting guys over the head with hatchets is not a very good practice.

I know who he was. He was a hero who killed a bunch of fascists who supported oppression of the black race.

And Robert E. Lee was nothing more than a treachorous piece of sh**t.

No. Brown was completely insane, and he chopped people up in their beds with swords.

Lee was morally against slavery and opposed secession. He fought for his State.

That makes him even worse. He believed what he was doing was morally wrong but he did it anyway.

No, he was morally against slavery. He opposed secession, but didn't think it was morally wrong.

He caused a destructive war over a cause he did not believe he was just. It's the "Good German" complex. One who does not have the courage to oppose their nation or state when it is doing something they oppose is a true coward.

What cause? The war was not over slavery, it was over whether or not the State could be dissolved.

Going by your logic, the president should only enforce federal laws he supports, because otherwise, he's a "coward."

You said he opposed succession too. Therefore Lee participated in a destructive war for something he opposed. He was causing all this for nothing.

And it depends on the law in question. I doubt many would support refusing to pardon a man on death row you believe is innocent.

Yeah, well legislatures can pass laws you don't like, but if your a police officer, you enforce them. He opposed secession, but he was loyal to his State, and I'm sure he believed they had the right to secede.

How about the federal income tax? If I enforced it, would I be a coward for following the law?

Um, no. He had his raiders throw babies in the air and catch them w/their pikes. He had women raped in their beds and men were slaughtered for no apparent reason. He was a traitor and more then deserved what that bastard got.

I oppose numerous government policies, politially, but I still obey the law.  I wish General Lee had been Senator Lee or Governor Lee.  Gov. Sam Houston, strongly opposed secession, and was impeached because of it.  He however, obeyed the law of his state, and didn't try to overthrow the government.  As each man had a different role, I admire both for doing their duty.
