The government's decided to extend VAT to all hot, pre-prepared foods. At one of the select committees, they asked Osborne about the effect it'd have on fast food take aways and other food shops like the popular
pasty shop chain
Greggs (which the government was heaping praise on the other week for hiring people) and he responded with something along the lines of "well, I don't remember the last time I even went to Greggs anyway", so it's been dubbed the 'Pasty Tax'. The tax'll inevitably harm such shops.
Pasty's are a stereotypically working class food. This is just pushing the 'out of touch Tories' mantra.
