In the event Mitt Romney actually wins the election in November...

Does he have to worry about a serious primary challenger (i.e. someone who could win at least one primary, and whose last name isn't Paul) come his re-election bid?

More to the point, does this inform the way he governs?  Does he tack slightly harder to the right as President than he might want to?  Does this rule out any Nixon-in-China style stuff until his second term?

And, while we're at it, who could be a credible primary challenger in 2016?

Yes, because he'd be the most alienating President in history.

I think there's a good chance he opts out of a losing re-election battle and lets a stronger challenger take on Cuomo.

I hope I won't have to choose between two Republicans in the first election I can vote in...

Era of serious primary challenges to incumbents may be over but Romney, nominated more unenthusiastically than anyone in memory, would test that theory.  Still, HW broke a "no new taxes" pledge and had a flagging economy and approvals in the 30s and still wasn't seriously challenged.

Ron Paul...or should I say, Rand Paul. I think Rand would primary Romney if he did not go after the FED, etc.

President Romney?

President Romney running for reelection?

Please, it's just like discussing the Duke of Edinburg being appointed Prime Minister.

Not a really major threat. Paul might but he can probably swat him aside reasonably effectively.

If we're really discussing this, remember three key things:

1. Ron Paul will be 81 in 2016
2. Rand Paul's Senate seat is up for re-election
3. If Rand is running for reelection, I doubt Ron would pull something like this

Depends on the sort of presidency he has.  If he does anything to convince the people who refuse to vote for him in the primaries now, that they were right to not vote for him, then yes.  I don't see being able to totally avoid the problem.  He will have to run a primary campaign in 2016.  Unless he really crosses the base, he'll have an easier time of it than he did this time, but there will be an opponent who gets enough delegates under this year's rules to have their name placed before the convention.  (The establishment may change the rules between now and 2016 if Romney is running for reelection.)

that would be bad if he had to do that...If hypothetical president romney isnt strong enough, no republican will be...

Not necessarily. Reagan would have probably sent Carter back to Georgia. Kennedy might have gotten to 200 electoral votes against Reagan.

No, of course not. I mean, there might be a primary challenge, but he wouldn't have to worry about it Smiley)

I don't think anyone would really be stupid enough to divide the party like that.
