Well, this is certainly amusing! Her Lieutenant Governor resigned three weeks ago after being embattled on dozens of ethics charges. The Senate President Pro Tem became the new Lieutenant Governor, one Glenn McConnell, whose only significance of note is being a vitriolic supporter of the Confederate flag (and at one point claimed that an attempt to take down a Confederate battle flag was equivalent to "cultural genocide"). Meet your next governor, South Carolina!
Now, now. McConnell does have an interest in the Confederacy, which for some people is controversial, so it has gotten outsized importance in his Wikipedia article since there was no real reason for people outside the state to pay much attention to him until lately. Other than his Confederacy quirk, he is by the standards of South Carolina politics a moderate Republican, and a competent one. The way our State Senate works, the president pro tem is usually a centrist as the Republican usually squabble over two candidates and the Democrats pick the one who they think is less likely to turn even trivial matters into party-line votes.
At this point, I'm more inclined to suspect fiscal incompetence than fiscal criminality on Haley's part if there is anything more than smoke here. At this point not even the local alternative newspaper is covering it, and they usually do a decent job of covering such stuff.
Damn I was hoping more details emerged from her affair.
I don't like Haley, but I'm convinced that there was no affair. Will Folks and Larry Marchant made their allegations for purely political reasons. The only thing I'm not sure of is whether Will Folks did it in hopes of helping Haley win the primary, which is what it did.
