http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2012/04/120406234458.htm

"Homophobia is more pronounced in individuals with an unacknowledged attraction to the same sex and who grew up with authoritarian parents who forbade such desires, a series of psychology studies demonstrates.

The study is the first to document the role that both parenting and sexual orientation play in the formation of intense and visceral fear of homosexuals, including self-reported homophobic attitudes, discriminatory bias, implicit hostility towards gays, and endorsement of anti-gay policies. Conducted by a team from the University of Rochester, the University of Essex, England, and the University of California in Santa Barbara, the research will be published the April issue of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology."

Title of thread is pretty bad, since it exaggerates quite a bit. But the tendency isn't that surprising, it makes psychological sense.

It's been the conventional wisdom for a long time, I'm not shocked that the science backs it up.

This study goes in the "no duh" pile of studies.

You mean there's still people who think Santorum isn't gay?

Hmm. Playing devil's advocate here, I recall taking a psych class that talked about a study that examined admitted homophobes reactions to gay porn compared to straight porn. The homophobes did register some arousal to the gay porn, but they actually registered more arousal to straight images. The professor said that the arousal from the gay porn could have been caused by stress or something. It sort of destroyed my view that most homophobes were gay. Some are certainly, but maybe  a lot of them just find it gross and are remarkably close minded.

I guess you could say many closet cases are homophobes, but not all homophobes are closet cases.

I guess you could say many  (at least a large minority of) closet cases are homophobes, but not all homophobes are closet cases.
