They'll "come around" enough for him to have a chance, but he'll blow that by being off-putting to Independents.

Only most races aren't still at four men by the point they are offically declared over by Gallup.

That's true.  McGovern was at 30% in Jun 72.  Romney definitely won't be this bad against Ron Paul in two months.

It's very amusing since McGovern was so out of sinc with his party, while Romney is not. After the Tea Party revolution, the GOP primary electorate now votes on rhetoric and personality, rather than a conservative record.

It's kind of like how most British voters didn't like Blair in 2005, yet he still won a pretty big majority.

Which is why Romney wins the nomination.

Romney wouldn't have been able to win the nomination without his $, he had to win state by state. And if there had been a national primary Romney would have lost to either of the "conservative" frauds, because they are more passionate in debates and say more inflammatory things and all that important stuff.

I reckon third parties will get more votes this year than in past elections.

Don't worry, many if not most of the "ABR" Republican demographic will embrace Romney-and they will, naturally, claim that they always supported him anyway.

The GOP attack dogs will run on Mitt being a "job-creating, hard-working entrepreneurial businessman" and will attack Obama for his elitist socialist anti-American radical dangerous yadda yadda Presidency. Mitt also is as hawkish on defense issues as they come. He fully embraces trickle-down economics (he's been a beneficiary of it, after all).

Mitt's main problems are his indifference to/flip-flopping on the Religious Right's issues, which could actually score him points among Independents (particularly women). But enough of the GOP will vote for him anyway, if it comes down to Obama or Romney.

Presidential elections aren't typically won by increasing base turnout.  There simply is not enough of a Republican base to counteract a Democratic Party unified by President Obama and Independents, whom the GOP is treading on thin ground with.

More likely, less people will turn out to vote.  I expect a sharp drop in turnout compared to 2008's high.
