Germany : Either Greens or Die Linke (whatever vote is likely to have a bigger impact). The SPD is just not a left-wing party anymore.

France : Parti Socialiste. Not a fantastic party, but the only serious progressive political force. I could see myself voting EELV as well sometimes, if they run a good campaign and if it wouldn't threaten the left as a whole.

UK : Labour, though I would have been very reluctant to do so in the New Labour era. Without hindsight, I would have voted LibDem in 2010 (yes, you can laugh at me now).

Italy : I will vote for SEL and generally support Vendola every time I have an occasion to. He is probably the greatest politician Italy has had since the 1970s. Before his rise, I would probably have voted for IdV or the radicals. Very rarely for the PDS/DS/PD.

Spain : Most certainly PSOE, since it's the only decent left-wing party. It is obviously flawed in the way most European left parties are, but it's still my best fit.

Poland : SLD and probably most of its previous incarnations. Hard to find a party I would really like.

Netherlands : Either PvdA, GroenLinks or the Socialist Party, I need to learn more about them to be sure. Most likely GL though.

Greece : Nowadays, probably Dimar. Traditionally PASOK (especially since I quite liked Papandreou).

Belgium : The wallon Socialists.

Portugal : Hard to choose between a bunch lefty nutjobs and a center-left party which isn't quite left-wing anymore. Probably PS in the end.

Sweden : I would have supported the Social Democrats since their creation. To put it short, they were my ideal party. Even though they've been very disappointing in recent years, I would stay fidel to them out of respect for their historical accomplishments.

Austria : Heck, I guess either the Greens or SPÖ when they aren't too moderatish. I'd certainly join the SPÖ bandwagon if it's necessary to stop the fascists.

Switzerland : Well, SPS I guess, but don't care much.

Denmark : Usually the Social Democrats out of traditions, but I would have gone for the Socialist People's Party in 2011.

Finland : Meh, all parties seem dull and uninspiring. Social Democrats by default.

Norway : Labour quite easily.

Ireland : Labour. SF could be a possibility, but I'm not sure.

USA : As my avatar says, I'd register as a Green out of spite toward Obama and his inability to take strong stances and to change things substantially (even when he had the leverage to). I'd obviously vote for Democrats 90% of the time.

Canada : Pretty easily NDP, especially under Layton.

Australia : Labour, I guess.

USA: Libertarian

UK: UK Independence Party

Germany: FDP

Israel: Ugh, none.

Canada: Libertarian Party of Canada

Australia: Liberal Party

Denmark: Liberal Alliance

Italy: Italian Radicals

Russia: Right Cause

France: UMP

Austria: Alliance for the Future of Austria

Ireland: Fianna Fail

Spain: CIU...?

Finland: Pirate Party. Seriously.

You wouldn't like UMP. They are borderline xenophobic on immigration and utterly backwards on all social issues.

Well, that's because there's no such a thing as a libertarian in France. Grin I guess you might go for one of the centrist outfits (probably not MoDem though).

We do have a LaRouchite candidate, though ! Grin

Well, France does have 'libertarian' parties but they're more in the vein of classical liberalism than America's weird conspiratory anarcho-capitalism. The oldest one is Alternative liberale, which has apparently merged into the NC. The other one is the Liberal Democratic Party (PLD) which is a split off of AL. There are some tiny anarcho-syndicalist parties as well, but I don't recall them running candidates much. In terms of proximity to social and economic liberalism, Borloo's Radicals are probably a good bet fwiw.

Historically, Alain Madelin's DL - their heir of Giscard's PR - was quite close to liberalism - though it had some pretty socially conservative elements. They also left a bad taste in my mouth because Madelin was pro-Iraq and the DL was formed by apologists for the FN who didn't see the trouble in allying with them for the sake of power.

Oh yeah, I forgot about Madelin.

Generally speaking, I think there are a few guys in the centrist parties - NC, Radicals, AC, etc... - who would be reasonably close to "libertarians". In the UMP as well, but considering their general populist nutjobbery I have a hard time seeing you fit there.

Meh, I've never got the point of ethnic parties. They don't fit my vision of what a modern democracy should be.

Supporting parties that have any chance of actually affecting public policy is a bourgeois attitude, you see.

In the case of Canada, "Socialist Alternative" doesn't even run in any elections.

That's probably a positive, according to TNF's logic. Tongue
