This is one of the most bizarre twistings of the English language I've seen in a long time.

This is one of the most bizarre twistings of the English language I've seen in a long time.

"Religion is bad and leads to destruction but following Jesus brings peace" type sermons are pretty common, and I've seen "Religion Kills, Jesus Saves" T-shirts and bumper stickers.

But of course it's pretty obvious in the Gospels that Jesus and religious leaders didn't exactly get along well.

Anti-religious leaders is not the same as anti-religion BRTD.  Jesus showed little patience for the infighting between the Jewish factions, but he was not anti-religion.

He was pro-religion in that he promoted his own form of it.

But if you follow Jesus you are a Christian; you are part of a religion. I know people are trying to 'sell' Christianity as it's a bit of a tainted brand (like that douche on YouTube) by saying; 'Oh we follow Jesus, we're not about religion' but that's just semantics, like following Buddha; it still makes you Buddhist.

When people claim to be Christian and anti-religion though it makes sense, they are kind of defining "religion" as either organized heirarchies or various leaders thinking everyone needs to follow their commands (like the Pharisees) or making it all about following rules and rituals, which is often what turns people off to Christianity and then what other churches go on about how they're not about that. Or people who see themselves more as a member of their specific church/denomination than a Christian.

But none of that is what 'religion' actually means, broadly defined.

Jesus was considered heretical by some of the religious authorities, and unobservant, so would have been considered anti-religion by them.  However, he was a student of the Torah and the prophets, and his criticism of the religion of his day referred back to this religious foundation.  Considering his criticism of the moneychangers at the Temple, he was angry because he respected the Temple, while also the rites to be available to people regardless of their ability to pay.  At the same time he did not assent to the exclusivity that the Temple at Jerusalem represented against Samaritans.
He came not to destroy the law, but to fulfill it. And so Jesus' criticism of religion was not to get rid of it, but to transform it into something that better reflected God's desire for a relationship with humankind.
