Lets start with a completely ridiculous sh*t.

"Do you think that we arrive somewhere in someone else's place, and we believe that we are at home. You may be wrong, but we are at home. And we will establish the rules that suit us, you want it or no. Any attempt to change this obolyutsya blood - there will be a second dead lake. We fill the city with blood. We will expand this network to the size of the Arab Caliphate. All Muslims should be united. I think that Russia should give us that opportunity "

Dagir Hasavov, who is assistant chairman of the Federation Council Committee on Social Policy and Public Health.

ROC liked the idea of "Moscow fill with blood" - it supports the establishment of sharia courts

Novye Izvestia "wrote that the Russian Orthodox Church supported the intention of Hasavov. Chairman of the Synodal Department for Church and Society of the Moscow Patriarchate Archpriest Vsevolod Chaplin told the newspaper that "the monopoly of non-religious people on the right goes to the past", and allow communities to live by their rules is permissible, provided that those rules "will not be imposed externally." According to Archpriest Chaplin, Sharia courts have long existed in North Caucasus republics, as well as "on a semi-underground level" are in Moscow. There may be in Russia and the Orthodox church courts, similar existed before the revolution ("Archpriest Chaplin, supported the establishment of sharia courts in the capital").

OK. First I saw the title, "Jews and Ukrainians are movers of capitalism", which struck me as somewhat racist, being an Ashkenazi whose parents were born in Kiev. Then I scrolled down and saw this photo: http://ttolk.ru/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/%D0%B6%D0%B8%D0%B2%D0%BE%D1%82%D0%BE%D0%B2.jpg

Many of the oligarchs, especially the original Yetsin era ones, are Jewish. So even if it has a racist slant, it is not wrong per se.

Banana Republic? The ethnicity break down is really a pointless excercise and you could say that it's hard to determine if the author is actually racist((s)he definitely gives that vibe, but I didn't see any outright racist statements in there after I skimmed the article), but I just wanted to point out how illegitimate the wealth of the oligarchs is in Russia, which is pretty important when discussing Russia. You would probably get similar results in US, but with slightly more people getting rich fairly and a few of the billionaires inheriting their parents fortunes.

Russia is more anti-muslim/Middle Eastern/Central Asian than it is anti-semitic. Anti-Ukrainian is probably the biggest sentiment though.

Did I say something that's incorrect? I just thought that I should put the oligarchs on the first page since that's what defines politics today in Russia.

ag are you an "old" btw(in American sense)? Also do you know who are olds and youngs in Russia today? I am really dissapointed at the fact that somewhat youngs(families with young kids) started going to church more often now, but I guess that's to be expected. When I was growing up there was a pretty deep divide between really olds and everyone else, because the olds would hang out on lavochkas and quarrel while consuming sunflower seeds and obviously vote communist. I'd be interested to know about the more nuanced generational differences in Russia that I couldn't observe as a kid.

I am not ag, but i live in Russia and "old" enough (55). So - my "2 cents".. Few old people still hang out on lavochkas and so on, but many of them still vote communist. Most of the other - vote for Putin and his "United Russia", being grateful to authorities even for the crumbs they have. Youth doesn't spend time on "lavochkas" too, and usually don't vote at all...

Kremlin changed many governors in last months in order to delay direct gubernatorial elections in their regions.

Forgive my ignorance, but does the opposition stand much chance of getting anywhere, or is Putin pretty well entrenched for the next decade+?

In non-democracies this is a very hard question to answer. He may stay there for 30 years, or he may be asking for an asylum in the German embassy tomorrow. Nobody knows, really.
