As in every year, May parades by Socialist Parties and Labour Unions take place in many countries around the globe today. In many countries, such as Austria, the day is even a public holiday. In Vienna, where the SPÖ is one of the most traditionalist parties, the Social Democrats are holding a parade with about 200.000 people, one of the biggest in the world:

I am spending May Day completing the rough draft of my thesis on the First International in the United States. I think it's very appropriate.

I prefer Loyalty Day instead.  It's a good reason to go ahead and recite the pledge as it was before others got their grubby mitts all over it.

"I pledge allegiance to my flag and to the republic for which it stands: one nation indivisible with liberty and justice for all."

As long as I'm being traditional today, might as well use the original salute to the flag instead of that revisionist hand over heart.

And America of course provides a good example of the horseshoe theory in action.

I love Pete Seeger, even if he is far from a Paleoconservative.

Oakland shows how Mayday protests are supposed to be done. Watch the video too.

And just in case anyone needed proof most of these people are complete idiots, we got this gem from one of the protestors.

Acts of violence in such instances are unjustifiable. Protesters who commit them are an embarrassing liability - not an asset - to the advancement of the People's interests. Also, the objectives of genuinely Marxist communists are inseparable from those of libertarians or anarchists.  And - as a general rule - the masses know little about public policy, government, and the social sciences. Do not expect too much from the rank-and-file members of most if not all political or social movements. It is only when such a lack of wisdom and political savvy is also characteristic of a movement's leaders and intellectual elites that I get really concerned. Occupy Wall Street's message is alienating to me, incidentally, but I imagine most of the people are well-intentioned even when they have neglected to think things thoroughly through, or are wrong about a few things. My attitude toward Tea Party protesters is the same.

some cool stuff in Ithaca today.  I didn't get to make it downtown where the main stuff was, but ran into some Occupiers on campus and went to a lecture run by Trotskyists - Happy May Day.

libertarian means something entirely different in the west of the world: with origins leaning towards Bakunin in the split with Marx, a stateless, hybrid of/for-itself movement towards socialism.

A couple other examples may be Peter Kropotkin and Noam Chomsky. I like the state, however, and do not want to entirely decentralize its functions to directly democratic processes and/or workers' councils.
