Also, what will the transition be like? Does SSM quickly become a "settled issue" that all major candidates are nominally in favour of, like the Civil Rights Act? Or could we see vocal anti-SSM marriage Republicans gaining significant fractions of the vote long after the party mainstream is in support of it?

It depends what happens with same sex marriage law.  If, for example, the Supreme Court decides in 2013 that it is a civil right, then I think the GOP candidate is likely to want to reverse it in 2016, but by 2020 or 2024 it will be accepted as law and the focus will be more on protecting the rights of organizations who don't agree with it in terms of adoptions, spousal benefits, etc.

It'll probably morph the way the civil rights movement transitioned after the Civil Rights and Voting Rights acts were passed. I can see DOMA being overturned and gay marriage legalized across America in the next 10 years. After that issue is settled, most GOP politicians will offer lukewarm support of same sex marriage and equal rights. But they will likely be against any further initiatives to promote LGBT rights.

By the end of the 2020s  or perhaps never....just look at the abortion issue, though that issue is "complicated".
