...the hell?
http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0512/76072.html

Marcus Bachmann, the congresswoman’s husband since 1978, reportedly was eligible for Swiss citizenship due to his parents’ nationality — but only registered it with the Swiss government Feb. 15. Once the process was finalized on March 19, Michele automatically became a citizen as well, according to Honegger.

So the woman who once demanded an investigation of "anti-American" members of Congress and rails against the creeping socialist authoritarianism of Barack Obama has decided to become a citizen of not just any foreign country, but a tiny European one with universal health coverage and all sorts of other evils?

That's certainly not a bad one to have. Although I can't imagine Bachmann wanting to belong to such a communist hellhole.

Hilarious.

This means she could always do a reverse Arnold and run on the SVP ticket in Swiss elections. Tongue

You'd think warmongers like Bachmann would hate neutral countries like Switzerland.

Well, in the eyes of the Tea Party it certainly is. Also, I don't know if she has a security clearance, or how the process works for members of congress, but if she does, it would foreign preference and foreign influence concerns.

Judging by the attention Bachmann's alleged dual citizenship receives, by how her Democratic opponent turned this into a campaign issue and by Bachmann's subsequent reaffirmation that she is 100% American, one might think she has been accused of having an Iranian or North Korean rather than Swiss passport.

On the other hand its the most Conservative country in Western Europe and both the business climate and the gun laws would be bearable for a US Republican. In many ways its a good fit for the Bachmanns. It would be funnier if she had got a Swedish citizenship or something like it.

Is it a double standard that Bachmann got called out for briefly being Swiss-American, while Rahm Emanuel has been in Congress, the Obama Administration and Mayor of Chicago while being an Israeli citizen and no one says a word about it?

I don't think so. Between the two of them I am willing to bet one has used the phrase "that is un-American" slightly more than the other.

I don't care if Bachmann is Swiss. It's her tea-party backers that have a beef.

Israel is way overrepresented in US halls of power, but that's no surprise.

The fact that Bachmann renounces her Swiss citizenship is even more hilarious than the fact she claimed it in the first place. She can't become Swiss because her followers are way too nationalist.

At least we know now that she'll remain a real Murican and true patriot. America had enough Benedict Arnolds already. Tongue

If Emanuel had chosen Israeli citizenship, like, in 2009, it would have been as bizarre as the Bachmann story and gotten the same attention. It was something he started his career with.

I guess the urban electorate of multicultural-minded Democrats that he has been elected by probably wouldn't make an issue out of someone with an additional nationality.

I don't have a problem with people holding dual citizenship with other countries, but I do think it's rather inappropriate to do so when holding a federal office.

So, had Ahnold decided to run for Senate in 2010 he should have renounced his Austrian citizenship first?

Which would make her stateless. Which would also necessarily make her an illegal immigrant, right? Right? One can dream.. Smiley

It's my understand that my children -- all born in Texas -- have automatic German citizenship because their mother is a native German.  It sounds like something similar happened to Bachmann and the MSM is just doing what it always does to Tea Party-types.

I just hope my kids, if they become involved in politics when they're of age, don't have to have this crap thrown at them because of their "German citizenship".
