Will the nations longest sitting Governor run for President? I say he will step down in '06, and go out on the campaign trail. He's a moderate, so chosing someone far right as a running mate such as Santorum or Owens, etc. should help secure the base.

Although he is pro-choice, he is anti-Roe v. Wade which should help calm the fears of the religious right. It's his support of gay rights that will hurt, but if he lays off that a bit it shouldn't hurt.

What do you think?

He should concentrate on re-election in 2006.  Early polls show him in bad shape against Spitzer.

Absolutely no chance someone like him could win a Republican presidential primary.  The religious wouldn't have it.

He really should just not run in 2006, that would be better.

Is he in that bad of shape Andrew?  He may be down in early polls but 2006 is a long way off.

He's been Governor for a long time now. I agree that he should step down and start planning his presidential campaign, assuming he wants to be President.

What part of the "gay rights" agenda does he support? Because if it is civil unions, no one will care.

Why the push for Pataki anyway?  Its not very likely that he would be able to deliver New York.

No, he wouldn't win New York, but he might win Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, etc.

I'd pay money to see Pataki as the Republican nominee for President.

He'd never win a primary, he's too liberal.

He's not doing too good, or atleast it seems like that. The Democrats of course dislike him and the GOP also seem to be getting tired of him.

The GOP's best hope for governor is definatly Giuliani, I would love it if he runs.

As someone who doesn't live in New York, I would much prefer that he run for U.S. Senator. :-)

Apparently you know very little about your own party.  No one of Pataki's ilk will be a Republican nominee again.  In fact most of the religious would rather his sort not even be in the party - look at the treatment of people like Arlen Specter by the social conservative/hate wing of the party.

NixonNow just said, Pataki opposes Roe v. Wade.

The hate wing of the party was dissolved when you left.

They wouldn't trust him on this issue.  He's not anti-abortion, even if he supposedly is anti-Roe v. Wade.  Why should they put up with a moderate New Yorker when they can have the real thing - one of their own.

Pataki hasn't been doing well for awhile now.  He did win in 02 by a large margin, but right after that things started going downhill for him fast.  When in early 03 the state was in a financial crisis or whatever the hell he said, but 3 months earlier when he was running for re-election things were in 'real good shape'.  Its probably been almost 2 years since his approval was above 50 (maybe a poll here or there had him above 50, but Pataki has been in the 40's in virtually every poll for about 2 years now

New York State has been airing television commercials promoting Lower Manhattan, starring Pataki in NYC, Los Angeles, Chicago, D.C., Philadelphia, San Franciso, Boston, Atlanta... obviously a move to bolster his image.

That waste of taxpayer money will end after Spitzer destroys Pataki in the 2006 election.

Are you that stupid.

NYC needs tourism and really must promote after 9/11.  It's like Rendell promoting Phila; it helps the economy.

I'll add that the "I love New York" -type campaigns have been going on for at least 20 years, if not longer
