Hmmm. I'm not too sure about this budget. Personally, I'd like to see some changes made to the Aid to Low-Income Families area. I think we should really take a look at where we can start pulling money out from the budget, and implement more job training programs for those on welfare. It looks like just too much money is going into some of these programs. If we can get Atlasia back to work, assitance will go down and maybe we can really balance the budget in the next few years.

I'm not against helping the people, I am against abusing the system.

I agree.  Would the President be comfortable with this idea?

I think Andrew was talking about investing some of the money spent on food stamps and welfare programs into programs that help bring people out of poverty so that the need for welfare services would be reduced.  I'm not sure what the specifics are for this, though.

Weird question- is there any way we could use this budget to merge departments of government and eliminate ones we don't need?  Obviously, the specifics would have to be worked out, but it would be great if we could use this opportunity to cut spending and bureaucracy at the same time.

Also, an amendment.

Pretty self-explanatory; this amendment will make the tax code more progressive by cutting the Income tax rate on the two lowest income groups and raising them modestly on the highest two.

This will cost us a considerable amount of tax revenue (about $150 B by my quick calculations) since so many more people pay the lower brackets.

We already tax the wealthy too much in Atlasia considering the top bracket is already 60%. I will not support making it higher while the lower brackets are this light. 35K a year is not poor; we do not need the government to try and "help" people making 35K a year.

In a time when unemployment is still very high, it is necessary that we keep taxes on the middle-class as low as possible.  I am willing to compromise on the other brackets, but taxes on the lowest bracket should absolutely be reduced.

For now, I will withdraw my amendment.  I still think we need to cut taxes on the lowest income group, but I would like to see what Ben has to offer first.

Now there's a campaign ad: "Senator Scott is so liberal he voted for more spending and taxation, even when it wasn't possible to do so!" At least it would be an ad, if you weren't running against a socialist Tongue

I'll be fair and say that 60% is a tad high for anyone to pay, but there definitely shouldn't be taxes for people of such an extremely low income group like students, as the Vice President mentioned.

How about instead...

I think this would make for a good compromise.  The downside of this, however, would be a steep decline in revenue...

Sorry for making this much more complicated than it needs to be.

I'm withdrawing all of my previous amendments and just proposing this:

Aye.  (This is a reluctant 'aye'... I hope to further resolve the tax issue after this passes or fails.)

you mean the current policy, or the bill?

When does the previous budget expire, anyway?  Are we in government shutdown mode, yet? Tongue
