You may have never heard of him- but he deserves recognition.

A former secretary-general of the Chinese Communist Party, Zhao Ziyang was a leading reformer. But he was toppled in 1989, after trying to find common ground with the student demonstrators in Tiananmen Square.

Interestingly, he was not killed, and permitted to travel.  Ironically, many of reforms still exist.

I just laugh at that.  Zhao Ziyang tried to take advantage of the Student demostrations to capture power at the center.  His scheme was defeated by his mentor Deng Xiao-Ping he was ousted from his position and deserved his fate for trying to use a crisis to expand his power base.

Permitted to travel? I don't think so. I think he was under house arrest til the end.
The times when such popular leaders were killed in China is pretty long gone.
Interestingly though, Zhao was never expelled from the Communist Party, which he first joined 70 years ago at the age of 15.

I don't think that's what he's getting at. What he is saying is that the man used the situation as an attempt to increase his own power, not because of altruism or any real good intent - it was greed that motivated him.

Now, I'm no expert on the subject, so I don't know if this is true or not, just explaining how I see what Jaichind said.
