On this day in 1963, Labour leader Hugh Gaitskell (Leeds South) died suddenly from a rare medical condition. He was 56.

When was the last time a Conservative leader died when head of the party? Labour had Smith and Gaitskell.

Quite possibly the best PM we never had.

He actually did try to abolish Clause Four, but the party stopped him and forced unilateral nuclear disarmament as policy for a year.
