Would you have supported funding the Taliban, or preferred the existing communist-backed regime?

There was not a Taliban then, and even within the Muj community at the time there was thousands of conflicts.  I dont get the relentless need for bifurcation.

All choices are bad, but Massoud early and throughout.

I would be a strong supporter of the Communists at the time. In retrospect: gun to the head.

Are we talking as if we were Afghans?  Or just alive at the time and distantly picking a side to root for?  If it's the former, probably on the side of the Commies...but how my interactions with them went could change that.  If it's the latter, then the "rebels".

This is a good answer.

Communists - by far the best government Afghanistan ever had, which is depressing in itself.

Communists, I wouldn't want as many conscripts from Russia to die.

PDPA-Khalq seems like a sensible answer.
