NFL Win Differentials by Division 1989-2011

So, what started as a project born from boredom about which NFC East team was the best since I've been alive has now morphed into my next big thing. It probably won't take very long and I figured some of you guys might be interested in the results. I'll do a new division every couple days hopefully. I started with the NFC East of course, considering it's the best, most interesting, and most popular. I compiled a list of their games and the outcomes each regular season and gave them 1 point for each victory while taking away a point for each loss. A tie leaves them even. And here are the results for the NFC East!



If you like this idea, let me know which division you want next and I'll do it by popular demand. And after that maybe I'll do other time periods.

     I'm curious to see the NFC West. The 49ers have been either very good or very bad throughout that timeframe, with little in-between.

BOOM, done. I was amazed at just how absurd these teams have been. The 49ers and Cardinals busted my scale with how good/bad they were. The Seahawks on the other hand seem determined never to stray to far from even. Meanwhile, the Rams have become equally determined to catch the ridiculous Cardinals in terms of being horrendous.

I will also say that I plan on putting off the AFC South as long as possible. And I'm doing the AFC North right now.

Aaaaand no problems. The Bengals almost outdid the Browns' awful record due to the Browns being able to remain even for three off seasons. The Ravens are the only real challenge to the Steelers and they're just hitting their groove now (by staying even with the Steelers), even after already winning a ring.

When you get a chance, I think the AFC West would be interesting.

All in line with anyone familiar with recent NFL history.  I expect the wacky, wild AFC West to look similar to the NFC East - no clear favorite.

AFC South will basically be Indianapolis domination in the last 10 years with middling to bad results for the rest.

Requesting the AFC East, because Buffalo and Miami dominated the early 90's with New England being a horrible football team. Would be nice to see the point where New England surpasses the other teams (if at all)

NFC South teams might all be in the negative.

NFC North would be pretty boring. Green Bay, Chicago, Minnesota all up there but not great and Detroit rock, rock bottom.

Yeah, I've seen that. I like that site. Pretty much the exact same as what I'm doing now.

AFC East is being worked on right now.

Order is pretty much what I expect in all the divisions, though I thought the Cowboys would still have a slight edge over the Giants despite the SB wins considering their regular seasons have mostly been the same in recent years.

The Rams sure have been a mess in recent years.

Tada! AFC East was a good one. The middling Patriots' meteoric rise is incredible. Overcoming two historically great teams to reach a spot near the top. Overall an even better division than I anticipated, despite the overwhelmingly uninteresting Jets. Up until 2004, the Dolphins were one of the most consistently decent teams in the league with very few streaks.

Time for a weird one. The AFC West has had a terrible couple years recently (except the Chargers). The Chiefs have managed to stop the bleeding but still aren't very good. The Raiders have been floundering since the Super Bowl. The Broncos can't quite get above being decent again and suffered their worst string of games in the chart just recently (not nearly as bad a streak as the Chiefs' implosion). Yet the Chargers have taken off after years in the pits.

Here's another for you, the cumulative successes of each division. The Wests had a horrendous close to last decade (well, the NFC West has been that bad for a while and stayed bad). NFC East is far ahead of course.
