BUENOS AIRES: Uruguay is planning a radical approach to the legalisation of marijuana by proposing the sale of the drug be controlled by the state.
The government is to become the first in the world to control the production, distribution and commercialisation of the drug.
Under the proposals, the state would sell marijuana to citizens, who would have to register on a database. It would also impose a maximum of ''marijuana cigarettes'' that can be consumed - reported to be 40 per month.

Two steps in the right direction, followed by a step to the side and a half step back.  I suppose it's better than the way it is in most places, but state control of every aspect of it?  That's bad.  Limiting the number of jays one can smoke in a month to 40?  Bad.  Do we limit the number of beers somebody can have?

So which countries have marijuana legal in some cases, as opposed to merely decriminalized? From what I can tell, it's Uruguay and Iran. Not what one would guess. Too bad Iran isn't so permissive about homosexuality.

According to wiki, it's only legal in Peru and Bangladesh.  They have it as decriminalized in Iran.

Marijuana possession has been always legal here. The new and funny part is that the government will control it (the "druggy" cards ideas was discharged) buying to third parties (people that want to cultivate it) and selling it in a lower price than the black market. I mean, I could cultivate cannabis in my backyard and the State will buy my production.

This is not a "freak" idea. The main purpose is to stop the selling of pasta base de cocaína, that is like crystal meth here.

You have to remember that Uruguay is the worst country for being a tobacco addict (my Marlboros rose their price 300% in three years).

Unlike alcohol, marijuana is not haram.

I would favour this approach being applied to cigarettes and alcohol as well. All revenue to be directed towards reducing addiction and mitigating the damage it does.
